2024: Launch of mass use of civilian UAVs. They will be monitored through ERA-GLONASS

On August 12, 2024, it became known that the Kaluga Region launched the mass use of civilian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which will be controlled through the ERA-GLONASS state information system. This became possible thanks to an agreement on the implementation of a pilot project between the regional government and GLONASS JSC.

Deputy Governor and Head of the Ministry of Digital Development of the Kaluzhskaya Region Dmitry Razumovsky, together with the General Director of GLONASS JSC Alexei Raikevich, signed a document on the development of Russian navigation and communication technologies in the region.

The project provides for the development of tracking of aerial pilots outside the line of sight of operators using elements of a hybrid communication network based on ERA-GLONASS. This innovation is designed to increase the safety and transparency of unmanned aircraft flights, as well as open dedicated routes for the use of UAVs in various areas of the region's economy.

Dmitry Razumovsky stressed the importance of creating a airspace monitoring system for the safe use of drones in areas such as cargo delivery and agricultural work.

Alexey Raikevich noted that the ERA-GLONASS transport monitoring platform is capable of tracking unmanned aircraft in territories with access to cellular communications. By August 2024, more than 350 thousand vehicles were connected to the system, including public transport in all regions of the country and small aviation in the Southern Federal District.

To ensure seamless monitoring and control of aerial pilots throughout Russia, it is planned to use developments in the field of satellite communications. The successful results of the pilot project in the Kaluga region will be scaled up throughout the country, which will open up new prospects for the mass use of civil unmanned aviation.[1]
