Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fifth most common malignant tumor associated with malignant diseases, the most common malignant tumor of the liver, as well as the leading cause of death among patients with cirrhosis of the liver.

HCC in most cases develops against the background of chronic viral hepatitis B (HBV), chronic infection of hepatitis C virus (HCV) and cirrhosis of the liver. Diabetes mellitus and obesity are increasingly important in the risk of developing liver tumor pathology.

According to data for 2022, liver cancer ranks third among all causes of cancer deaths in the world, and the second is the least likely cure among all cancers. The leader in the number of newly diagnosed cases of liver cancer is China - 45% of diagnoses are made there, and in 71% of cases this happens at an advanced stage, and the average age of patients is 53 years.

2020: More than 5,000 cases per year in Russia

Liver cancer cases in Russia are reported annually more than 5,000, and 6 out of 10 patients die in the first year after ^[1]This is the only type of cancer, the number of deaths from which exceeds the number of primary diagnoses. Such a high mortality rate leads to the fact that only 3 out of 10 patients have a chance to undergo more than one line of therapy, and therefore the first line plays a decisive role.

2019: More than 6 thousand cases in Russia

At the beginning of 2019, HCC occupies 90% of all primary liver malignancies and has the most aggressive course with an unfavorable prognosis (5-year patient survival rate does not exceed 15%). Among the causes of oncological mortality, HCC ranks 2nd. More than 6 thousand new cases of HCC are registered in the Russian Federation every year, most often already at a far advanced stage that is not subject to special treatment.

2021: Test released to detect early-stage liver cancer

In early December 2021, Helio Health and Fulgent Genetics announced the launch of a blood test for HelioLiver liver cancer. The test has a specificity of 91% and demonstrated 76% sensitivity in detecting early-stage liver cancer, surpassing other detection tools such as alpha-fetoprotein test (57%), hepatocellular carcinoma probability estimates (65%), and ultrasound (47%).
