How Moscow City became a criminal gateway due to cryptocurrencies
The Moscow International Business Center "Moscow City" has become the epicenter of criminal activity associated mainly with cryptocurrencies and digital fraud. This became known at the end of May 2024.
According to Izvestia, a significant part of the crimes in Moscow City are related to operations with cryptocurrency. In addition to legal gaps in the regulation of this area, the greed and financial illiteracy of potential victims are allies of fraudsters.
According to the newspaper, attackers actively use social networks to attract people who do not have experience in the financial sphere. Swindlers position themselves as experts and often go for a trick, multiplying the victim's down payment to create the illusion of easy earnings.
Moscow City towers are increasingly becoming an end point in the route of citizens deceived by telephone fraudsters. Attackers, posing as employees of the Central Bank or special services, send victims to the crypto exchanges of the business center, where they transfer their funds to cryptocurrency and send criminals to wallets.
The publication reports on the case when a 71-year-old pensioner lost 12.6 million rubles, transferring them to cryptocurrency at the direction of fraudsters. Another 69-year-old woman lost 17.6 million rubles - money from the sale of her own apartment - in a similar way.
Cryptocurrency today is one of the most convenient ways for criminals from Ukraine and from other countries to withdraw funds from Russia without problems with the law, Izvestia quotes a specialist in combating property crimes. |
According to the publication, the so-called "scanners" are also active in Moscow City - highly qualified car thieves who use expensive electronic equipment to open electronic car locks.[2]
