2021: 3D projector market estimated at $3.55 billion

The volume of the global market for projectors capable of displaying 3D images in 2021 amounted to $3.55 billion. This was reported at the end of December 2021 by analysts ResearchAndMarkets.

They did not specify the dynamics of sales of 3D projectors in comparison with 2020, but noted that the market is on the rise, and growth will continue in subsequent years.

According to researchers, the market for 3D projectors is growing due to several factors, namely:

• the increasing use of such equipment in cinema halls and houses;
• the popularity of 3D projectors in museums, exhibitions and various public events;
• digitalization of educational and other sectors;
• the development of technologies in the field of projection of a three-dimensional picture (first of all, it concerns the quality of images, network capabilities);
• trends in the transition to laser projectors;
• gaming industry: gamers are increasingly using 3D projectors in games, as they provide a presence effect and a more realistic picture.

As for the barriers that hinder the development of the market, experts attribute them to technical shortcomings in the use of metal-halogen lamps and DLP technology. Another problem is the high cost of equipment and its repair. In addition, LED screens compete with projectors.

The report says DLP is the dominant technology in the 3D projector market by 2021. Depending on the light source in the projectors (metal-halogen lamps, LED, hybrid solutions, laser), the largest sales are in laser devices.

Laser phosphor source and RGB laser are used in such devices. Some advantages of laser projectors include low replacement or maintenance costs or lack thereof; higher constant brightness with an average laser source life of 20,000 hours; precision and color stability; greater energy efficiency. Sony, BenQ, Barco and NEC are among the few companies offering laser 3D projectors.

In terms of the applications of 3D projectors, cinemas are leading, and the Asia-Pacific market is most popular among geographical regions. Despite the advent of an increasing number of projectors capable of outputting images with resolution, in 4K 2021 Full HD models were the leader in sales.

The study explains that 3D projects are able to reproduce volumetric content when the illusion of the third dimension (depth) is created on a regular flat screen. Such a video is recorded in a special format, in which the visible image is divided into two parts - for the left and right eyes - and is viewed through special glasses, which most often need to be bought separately. 3D content provides a presence effect and a sense of immersion in what is happening. At the same time, such an image poses increased requirements for screen quality (glasses often obscure the visible image), and in some visual disorders, normal viewing of a three-dimensional picture is impossible, analysts warn.

According to ResearchAndMarkets forecasts, between 2021 and 2027, the volume of the global market for projectors with support for 3D content will grow by about 6.85% per year and reach $5.27 billion by the end of this period of time.^[1]
