2021: The number of suicides of children in Russia increased by a third

In 2021, 753 cases of suicide among children were recorded in Russia, which is 37.4% more than a year earlier. This is stated with reference to the data of the Investigative Committee (IC) in the report of the Commissioner for the Rights of the Child Maria Lvova-Belova.

According to these materials, in 2018, the UK registered 788 suicides among minors, in 2019 - 737, and in 2020 - 548.

According RBC to the press service of Rosstat, in 2021, 375 minors committed suicide in Russia, of which 254 were suicides among adolescents 15-17 years old.

The number of children with suicidal behavior is also noted by the Prosecutor General's Office. The agency analyzed 30 subjects and found out that the number of children with tendencies to suicide in 2020 and 2021. increased from 635 to 882, respectively.

Lvova-Belova stressed that the main reasons for committing suicide are quarrels and conflicts with parents, unhappy love, problems with studying at school, dissatisfaction with appearance, mental problems, as well as the influence of information from the Internet.

The Ombudsman added that children have a need for qualified psychological assistance, in connection with which, in her opinion, "it is necessary to improve state policy in the field of preventing suicide among minors."

According to Maria Lvova-Belova, in 2021, 3,675 suicide attempts among children were registered in Russia, which is 13% more than three years earlier. The number of repeated attempts during this time increased by 92.5%, to 362 cases.

Most suicides in 2021, according to Rosstat, were recorded in the Volga Federal District (84 cases), followed by Siberian (77 cases) and Central (63 cases). The largest number of suicides occurred in the Moscow region, where 21 children committed suicide.[1]
