2022: Global X-ray Scanner Market for Interventional Surgery Valued at $4 Billion
In 2022, the global market for X-ray scanners for interventional surgery is estimated at $4 billion. This was reported by the analytical agency Signify Research at the end of June 2023.
Several factors contributed to this growth, such as the priority investment of medical institutions in surgical equipment, the predominant growth of office laboratories and outpatient surgical centers in the United States. Significant advances in structural heart surgery have also contributed to the growth, including procedures such as complex coronary interventions, percutaneous valve repair and replacement, and mitral valve replacement.
According to Signify Research, in the mobile C-arm 3D market, mobile C-arms with a flat-panel detector (FPD) will outstrip the growth rate of 2D C-arm technology, and the growth rate of revenues until 2027 will be 8.3%. According to analysts, the use of 3D K-arms expands and extends beyond spinal procedures for use in pointing sensors in biopsies. The emergence of Asian mobile C-arm manufacturers such as Wandong, Perlong, Allergers, and Kiran X-ray increased competition and made 2D mobile C-arm systems more affordable, threatening demand for image amplifier technology from established manufacturers.
In the interventional radiography market, interventional radiology is experiencing a decline due to a steady increase in the volume of procedures. In interventional neurology, the fastest growth is predicted due to the emergence of stroke centers in North America and Western Europe, contributing to the demand for biplane technology. The market outlook for interventional cardiology remains favorable as clinical demand is supported by the continued expansion of procedures such as TAVI, TAVR and mitral and tricuspid valve replacement.
The expansion of outpatient surgery centers and office laboratories continues to drive the growth of the North American market. As clinical cases become more complex, the adoption of premium technologies is expected to increase. However, the recent rise in system prices is temporarily hampering this progress. Health care providers in North America have faced problems due to inflation, which has negatively affected their investments.
According to Signify Research, Latin America was negatively affected by currency fluctuations and rising inflation. Single-plane interventional X-ray systems are acquired mainly due to budgetary constraints.
In the Western European market, the largest growth in 2022 was observed in Spain and Portugal thanks to government investment in replacing the outdated fleet of devices. Other Western European countries continued to experience difficulties related to market maturity as well as the relative impact of inflation on capital expenditure.[1]
2016: Market size of $5.2 billion
In May 2018, Data Bridge Market Research, an analytical company, released a study on the market for radiotherapy equipment, which is used mainly for the treatment of malignant tumors.
In 2016, sales of such medical equipment on a global scale amounted to $5.2 billion. In the period from 2017 to 2024, the market will grow by about 7.5% annually and will reach $9.3 billion by the end of this period of time, experts predict.
According to them, the market for equipment for treatment of ionizing radiation (X-ray, gamma radiation, beta radiation, neutron radiation, elementary particle beams from a medical accelerator) is concentrated in the hands of several large manufacturers, and small players work mainly in local markets.
Varian Medical Systems became the largest manufacturer of equipment for radiotherapy in 2016. Its share is not indicated. The list of notable market participants also includes the following companies:
- Elekta;
- Accuray;
- CIVCO Medical Solutions;
- Brainlab;
- C. R. Bard;
- IsoRay Medical;
- Nordion;
- RaySearch Laboratories;
- PRECISIS;
- Mevion Medical Systems;
- Technicas Radiofiscas;
- Hitachi;
- Sumitomo Heavy Industries;
- Mitsubishi Electric;
- ProNova Solutions;
- ProTom International.
Data Bridge Market Research classifies radiation therapy equipment into three treatments: external and internal beam therapy, and systematic radiation therapy.
External beam radiotherapy is divided into radiation therapy with modulated intensity (IMRT), radiation therapy under visual control (IGRT), tomotherapy, stereotactic radiation, 3D-conformal radiation therapy, proton radiation therapy and volume modulation rotational therapy (VMAT).
According to experts, the IGRT equipment segment will be the largest on the market, and the highest growth rates will be demonstrated by the VMAT segment.[2]
2016: Medical and industrial X-ray scanner sales of $16.6 billion
In February 2017, the analytical company Technavio released brief results of research on the global X-ray equipment market. Its volume, according to experts, will increase by almost a third in five years.
In 2016, global sales of X-ray plants amounted to $16.59 billion. This includes solutions used not only in medicine, but also in the industrial sector. By 2021, the market in question may grow to $21.8 billion, and the average annual growth rate of the market will be measured at 2%. In the Americas, the sale of this equipment will rise by 1.6% per year and will amount to $6.74 billion by 2021, the researchers expect.
According to them, the market is increasing largely due to the growing demand for portable regnten systems and devices customized for specific medical institutions. In addition, the increase in the number of strategic acquisitions in the digital radiography market is affected.
Most (97.4%) of global sales of X-ray equipment in 2016 came from the healthcare segment. The remaining share was taken by the industrial sector. The average cost of a digital X-ray system in 2016 was $180 thousand.
Technavio's report said the X-ray market is characterized by the presence of several local and international companies. To increase competitiveness, manufacturers have to actively invest in research and development, as well as conclude transactions on mergers and acquisitions. According to the results of 2016, the following companies became the largest players in the market:
In addition, analysts note the presence of:
- GE Healthcare,
- UMG/DEL MEDICAL,
- Konica Minolta,
- Philips Healthcare,
- Siemens Healthcare,
- Toshiba Medical Systems,
- Varian Medical Systems,

- Nikon,
- North Star Imaging,
- VJ Group и
- Willick Engineering.[3]
2015: Medical X-ray scanner sales rise to $8.9 billion
In April 2016, P&S Market Research published the results of a study of the global X-ray equipment market. Its volume is growing due to an increase in the population on the planet and growing medical costs.
According to P&S Market Research, sales of X-ray machines increased to $8.9 billion in 2015. Analysts did not specify the indicator of the previous year, but noted that in the period from 2016 to 2022 the market will grow by about 5% annually, and the segment of portable solutions - by 7%.
Among the main drivers of the growth of equipment intended for X-ray examinations, experts include an increase in the number of people on the planet, an increase in health care costs in the world, as well as the growing prevalence of chronic diseases and an improvement in health care infrastructure in developing countries.
In the Asia-Pacific region, experts expect the world's highest average annual growth in sales of X-ray devices - at 5.7% in the period 2016-2020. At the same time, the largest market for these products in 2015 was North America.
The P&S Market Research study lists the names of the main manufacturers of X-ray equipment[4]:
