2021: Launch of Open Digital Infrastructure Project for Agriculture
In early May 2021, the Linux Foundation launched an open digital infrastructure project for agriculture. AgStack Foundation is designed to provide cooperation between all parties interested in development of the international agricultural sector, including private business, the governments and scientific community.
AgStack Foundation is focused on creating and maintaining a free digital infrastructure for both applications and related data. It will build on existing technologies and agricultural standards, publicly available data, and other open source projects such as Kubernetes, Hyperledger, Open Horizon, Postgres, and Django.
In the agricultural industry, a number of open source technologies have already appeared, such as the FarmOS web application for farm management and planning, created by the community of farmers, researchers and developers. But with the support of the Linux Foundation, the AgStack Foundation project will be able to accelerate the introduction of compatible technologies that can be used and scaled for free.
As part of the project, it is planned to launch a number of applications that can be created and used with the help of AgStack: from plant protection and feeding to crop management and improved interaction in the supply chain. The project should combine connected devices and automated tools to optimize crop growth and circumvent critical obstacles, such as labor shortages.
AgStack Foundation participants, according to a press release, reflect the full range of technologies used in agriculture: among them Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), which is already implementing a number of agricultural initiatives, Purdue University with the Laboratory of Agricultural Informatics, California University of Agriculture and Natural Resources and FarmOS.[1]
