2018: Foxconn buys Belkin for $866m

On March 27, 2018, contract electronics manufacturer Foxconn announced the acquisition of Belkin to expand sales of branded products. The transaction value is $866 million. The entire amount will be paid from the buyer's own funds (without transferring part of its shares).

According to the Bloomberg news agency, citing a statement Foxconn made to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Belkin is being bought by Foxconn's subsidiary FIT Hon Teng, which will gain access to more research and development opportunities as a result of the deal thanks to more than 700 patents owned by the American company.

The company also believes that the purchase of Belkin will strengthen the portfolio of premium consumer products and accelerate the strengthening of FIT's position in the smart home market.

Foxconn, known primarily for assembling iPhones commissioned by Apple, aims to ease reliance on its core business - contract electronics production - to boost sales of its own branded products. In 2016, Sharp was bought, which allowed Foxconn to launch TVs, and were also invested in artificial intelligence and Big Data technology.

According to founder and CEO of Belkin Chet Pipkin, the Foxconn deal provides "significant synergies" and provides the company with more resources to invest in personnel and market opportunities.

The Belkin purchase will be considered by the US Foreign Investment Committee (CFIUS), which is closely monitoring all transactions when it comes to the sale of US assets. Foxconn is a Taiwanese company, but it is actively expanding US production, which should take into account the authorities when considering the takeover of Belkin.[1]
