History

2019: Smith & Nephew purchased the division of Brainlab which is engaged in orthopedic reconstruction of joints

On March 12, 2019 Smith & Nephew announced purchase of division of Brainlab company which is engaged in orthopedic reconstruction of joints. Besides, the companies signed the agreement on joint development of additional applications for the advanced platform of automation. For Smith & Nephew robots surgeons became very attractive direction.

Purchase allowed Smith & Nephew company to purchase also the relevant trade division of Brainlab which owners are going to integrate with division of surgical robotics. Besides, Smith & Nephew announced that it is going to implement the software of Brainlab for reconstruction of a hip in the portable surgical Navio 7.0 system developed by the company which release is planned for the second half of 2019.

Smith & Nephew purchased software developer for reconstruction of joints for the purpose of creation of the new robot surgeon

Smith & Nephew considers that it thanks to this acquisition in 2019 will be able already to provide the robotic platform for surgeries of new generation. The commercial release of the platform is planned for 2020. According to developers, the new platform will be much more compact and even more high-speed, than Navio 7.0 which is still in development. To the platform it is going to add function of augmented reality and also function of independent operation and machine learning of robotic manipulators.

After purchase Smith & Nephew announced plans to open the new research and development center devoted to robotics in Pittsburgh.^[1]
