Investing €3 billion in digital trade
On November 9, 2021, the French supermarket chain Carrefour announced the investment of €3 billion between 2022 and 2026 in expanding digital trade. These investments have become a key element of the new strategic plan, which is being worked on by retail manager Alexander Bompar.
According to a representative of Europe's largest food retailer, the announced investment is 50% more than Carrefour's similar expenses since 2018 in the amount of about €600 million per year. As a result, the company raises the total annual investment to €1.7 billion, which corresponds to a higher limit of the range of €1.5 - €1.7 billion, announced in early 2021.
Accelerating e-commerce, increasing data and retail media, digitalizing financial services will be one of the main drivers of Carrefour's promotion on the Internet. The promotion of e-commerce, in particular through express delivery and innovative services, is designed to provide Europe's largest food retailer with an advantage over its competitor in the market, Amazon.
Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO Alexander Bompar, who has been the head of the company since July 2017, was re-elected for a new three-year term. He has the task of carrying out the second stage of the Carrefour transformation without additional financial resources, which would be provided with two unsuccessful transactions in 2021, one with Canadian Couche-Tard and one with French Auchan. At the beginning of November 2021, Carrefour occupies 19% of the market in France, Auchan - 8.9%, and Leclerc - about 21%. Bompard is expected to present his new strategic plan in early 2022. The company published a medium-term plan for the development of e-commerce to strengthen online trading and the value of the French retailer Carrefour increased by 0.7%.[1]
Yandex has agreed to deliver products from Carrefour supermarkets in Dubai by robots
On November 3, 2021 Yandex announced the conclusion from the contract with one of the largest operators of shopping centers, retail trade and rest in the Middle East, in Africa and Central AziiMajid of Al Futtaim. The agreement concerns the development of technologies for unmanned delivery of goods in Dubai.
According to the terms of the agreement, products from Carrefour stores in Dubai will be delivered by Yandex robots. Customers will be able to track the movement of the robot with their order in real time in the MAF Carrefour application. Thus, Carrefour will be the first grocery retailer to use unmanned robots to deliver orders in the region. More details here.
Withdrawal of 29 types of ice cream from sale due to carcinogen contamination
In August 2021, the Carrefour supermarket chain published a list of 29 varieties of own-brand ice cream that it intends to remove from its establishments due to contamination with "carcinogenic" ethylene oxide. These products are added to a long list published last month and affected ice cream brands Nestlé and Mars.
