Performance at TAdviser SummIT

On November 29, 2018, China Mobile International Russia (CMI Russia), which is responsible for developing the business of the world's largest operator China Mobile in Russia, together with leading players in the Russian and international markets, will summarize the business development in 2018 as part of TAdviser SummIT. The company plans to take an active part in most sessions in connection with extensive plans for the development of the corporate business in 2019. Despite the fact that 2018 was only the first year for CMI in the corporate business market in Russia, the company has already been able to conclude several major transactions and wants to demonstrate that it is able to work not only with large Chinese customers, but also welcomes in every possible way working with any Russian companies, both in the priority Asian direction for the company and in Russia. CMI aims to become a full-fledged player in the Russian corporate market, providing Russian business with a "window to China."

In 2018, CMI also acted as an investor in the Russian economy - as part of the development of global capabilities to provide data center services, a deal was concluded to acquire the necessary infrastructure from one of the leading market players, DataPro. As part of Strategy 2020, CMI has set the goal of becoming a prominent player in the global data center market, providing the highest level of basic service and using infrastructure around the world to provide the entire range of communication and ICT services. Now such resources will be available in Russia.

In 2019, CMI primarily plans to intensify work with existing partners, working to constantly expand their number and include them in the global network of cooperation in the provision of ICT services, both in Russia and internationally. Despite the fact that the basis of the company's business remains traditional products in the field of communications, the company actively invests in its development in other areas. In particular, in the coming year, CMI hopes to use together with its Russian partners all its accumulated international experience and extensive resources to advance its IoT decisions and implement projects in the field of smart infrastructure in Russia.

Opening of China Mobile International office in Russia

On September 20, 2018, China Mobile, the largest Chinese mobile operator, officially opened an office in Russia and spoke about its plans. The head of the Russian office is Lu Jing, who in addition to China Mobile previously worked also at China Telecom.

The legal entity of the Russian office - China Mobile International (Rasha) LLC - was registered in December 2017. Its founder is a subsidiary responsible for international business - China Mobile International. Even earlier, in 2015, a legal entity with the status of a representative office was opened in Russia. It represented the interests of China Mobile to develop cooperation with Russian telecom operators.

China Mobile says that in the future they see for themselves in Russia three main strategic directions of development. This is B2O (business with operators), B2B (enterprise customers) and B2C (mobile users).

China Mobile sees the main prospects in the development of the corporate segment in Russia in servicing companies doing business with the Asian region. It expects to provide services on favorable conditions for Chinese corporate clients in the Russian market and business solutions for Russian companies entering the Chinese market through cooperation with Russian operators and infrastructure development.

Opening ceremony of China Mobile International office in Russia

At the opening ceremony, the Russian office of China Mobile signed a cooperation agreement with the Chinese business center Park Huamin in Moscow. In the future, the office will be located in this center. The agreement provides that the company will provide digital communication services (in particular, data services) to the Chinese business center.

The company sees prospects for the provision of roaming services in Russia in the future, cloud services, cooperation with large mobile operators in the field of IoT and terminal devices with 4G support.

Earlier, China Mobile announced that they were also considering the possibility of launching a virtual telecom operator (MVNO, mobile virtual network operator) in Russia. Anatoly Dmitriev, sales director at China Mobile's Russian office, told TAdviser that the company does not rule out its launch in 2019.

According to him, at the very initial stage, China Mobile in Russia and the CIS plans to develop an inter-operator business. In the interests of Chinese customers, China Mobile rents data channels from operators in Russia and Kazakhstan on a long-term basis, and already has many routes here. Dmitriev explained that Chinese users of the operator often enter the.com zone to access content that is based in Europe. Therefore, first of all, China Mobile has a need to develop communication channels connecting China and Europe.

In total, China Mobile has 138 communication nodes around the world. The company understands that the market is moving towards content and virtualization, and by connecting all its communication nodes, it will be able to provide any service anywhere in the world as soon as possible, Dmitriev notes.

The company chose not to announce the list of operators providing China Mobile in Russia with communication channels. One of them is Megaphone. The operator previously launched a 100 Gbit/s trunk route for China Mobile for data transmission between Europe and Asia, which passes through Mongolia and Belarus[1].

In addition to cooperation in the field of communication channels, China Mobile sells some services to telecom operators in Russia through its network in China, TAdviser was told in the company, without going into details. Having a local office, companies are easier to communicate with telecom operators in Russia, Dmitriev notes.

According to TAdviser, at the time of the official opening of the office in September, 15 employees work in it, and it is planned to expand to 40 employees in 2019.
