By acquiring Data Mechanics, NetApp is struggling to grow sales in the fast-growing cloud market, competing with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Google and IBM. According to forecasts, in 2022 the volume of this market will reach $397 billion.

History

2021: NetApp bought Data Mechanics

At the end of June 2021, NetApp acquired the French developer of the big data platform Data Mechanics. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

In 2021, NetApp also acquired Spot, a supplier of CloudOps. This technology is now known as Spot from NetApp. Data Mechanics and Intellectual Property teams will be integrated with the Spot team and portfolio from NetApp to accelerate the development of the recently announced NetApp Spot Wave solution that simplifies, optimizes, and automates workloads in public cloud environments.

Representatives of the company note that the use of analytics and machine learning is extremely necessary to improve operational efficiency, reduce costs and automate manual processes so that engineers can focus on strategic tasks.

Anthony Lye, Senior Vice President and General Manager of NetApp Public Cloud, added that integrating Data Mechanic technologies into the company's solutions will simplify and make it more cost-effective to use Apache Spark and Kubernetes to advance customer data-processing initiatives.[1]
