History

2021: Stryker bought Gauss Surgical

In early September 2021, Stryker closed a deal to acquire Gauss Surgical at a price that the companies did not disclose.

Gauss Surgical has developed Triton, an AI platform for monitoring blood loss in real time during surgery. Triton has demonstrated improvements in quality and surgical care through earlier recognition of bleeding, leading to earlier intervention.

Triton's innovative technology will help fill a gap in blood loss quantification to ensure accuracy, early detection of bleeding, and prevention of maternal morbidity. We are confident that Triton technology will help improve industry standards for quantifying blood loss in the labor and delivery department, supporting Stryker's commitment to improving safety and outcomes for our caregivers and their patients, "said Dylan Crotty, president of the Stryker Instruments division.

Up to 5% of mothers will experience postpartum bleeding, which is the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide. Studies show that 70% of them can be prevented. The joint commission found that prevention, early recognition and timely management of maternal bleeding have the greatest impact on reducing maternal complications.

Kevin Lobo, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Stryker, said earlier that in January-July 2021, the company paid a little more than $1 billion in debt from the beginning of 2021 and the company will continue to look for opportunities to move forward to get ahead of the debt repayment schedule. Stryker adheres to a strategy in which small M&A deals will provide the greatest short-term growth prospect. Buying Gauss Surgical fits into this strategy.[1]
