History

2022:100% reduction of fossil fuel use in own enterprises

Hitachi Energy uses electricity in its own enterprises, 100% produced without fossil fuels. The company announced this on February 4, 2022.

The company aims to make its production carbon-neutral by 2030, in line with its goal of "Ensuring a sustainable energy future around the world."

By achieving the goal of 100% fossil fuel-free electricity use in our own operational processes, we have reduced our CO2 emissions by more than 50% compared to 2019, said Claudio Fackin, CEO of Hitachi Energy. Net Zero's mission is global, and it is to act now by innovating and collaborating across countries, industries, and communities. Together with customers, partners and all stakeholders, we are making the global energy system more reliable, flexible and secure.

The target 50% reduction achieved ahead of schedule would be approximately 175 kilotons of CO2 per year, equivalent to removing more than 35,000 cars from roads cars.

To achieve 100% use of "clean" electricity in its own operational processes - and in support of Hitachi Group's carbon neutrality goal 3 - the company chose a number of areas, including support for fossil fuel-free proprietary electricity projects, such as the installation of solar panels on the roof in combination with e-meshTM digital solutions for distributed energy resources that maximize energy efficiency and minimize CO2 emissions. At its Zhongshan Plant in China, the company produces almost 20% of its total electricity consumption from solar panels. The plant is expected to generate 1,510 megawatt hours (MWh) in its first year of operation, which will reduce annual carbon emissions by more than 1,000 tons.

To eliminate fossil fuels altogether, Hitachi Energy also switched to green tariffs, acquired Energy Certificates (energy attribute certificate/EACs) and signed Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for its manufacturing processes and facilities in 90 countries.

Thinking about the future, Hitachi Energy continues to invest in its transition to carbon neutrality by further improving energy efficiency, as well as electrifying its own operational processes. In the city of Ludwika (Sweden), the company uses 100% renewable electricity generated by hydroelectric power plants and solar panels to maintain its operations as of February 2022 . The Ludvika factory not only solved the problem of electricity supply, but as of February 2022 it is close to abandoning the use of all fossil fuels in all its production processes.

The company has sufficient experience in implementing its own technologies in its operational activities to integrate renewable energy sources.

Following the plan and goals of Sustainable Development 2030, the company remains committed to strengthening activity aimed at sustainable business development.

2021: Renaming to Hitachi Energy

Hitachi ABB Power Grids on July 6, 2021 announced its intention to further develop and rename Hitachi Energy from October 2021. The decision to change the name was made with the consent of the board of directors and shareholders of the company.

This has played a leading role in building a more secure, smart and environmentally sound global energy system.

Hitachi ABB Power Grids aims to provide a sustainable power supply for the future. The transition to the name Hitachi Energy reflects the rapidly changing energy landscape and the ability to create economic, environmental and social values; and, together with Hitachi, allow businesses to position their innovative and digital technologies to serve existing and future customers, going beyond the power grid and opening up a wide range of opportunities in areas such as environmentally sound mobility, smart infrastructure and data centers. By combining digital solutions and services such as Hitachi Lumada with an energy platform based on knowledge and experience, the business serves customers and partners, together creating global solutions to address the common challenge of an inclusive and equitable future with zero carbon balance.
