1784: "Arabeskovy" - the first major service ensemble made at the IFZ

The table-dessert "Arabeskovy" service for 60 cuverts worth 25 thousand rubles, commissioned by the Prosecutor General of the Senate and the IFZ manager Prince A.A. Vyazemsky in 1784, included 973 items of 50 items. It got its name from the ornamental motifs depicted on the objects, repeating the murals found during the excavations of Pompey and Herculaneum.

The table decoration (surtout de table) of nine sculptural compositions, designed to glorify Catherine ІІ and her enlightened rule, was created by J.-D. Rashett according to the project of Prince A.A. Vyazemsky and, presumably, with the participation of architect N.A. Lvova and G.R. Derzhavin. It includes the central composition "The Foot of Her Majesty" and the allegorical groups "Justice," "Humanity," "Crimea, or Tavris, under the power of Catherine II," "Georgia under the auspices of Russia," "Military Force," "Sea Force," "Generosity" and "Rule."

On September 23, 1784, the service was presented to the empress in one of the rooms of the Winter Palace, and then demonstrated to foreign ministers. The arabesque service is the first major ceremonial ensemble made at the IFZ, in connection with which it was used at the Imperial Court during the most solemn ceremonial receptions and dinners.

The main part of the service (181 items) is in the collection of the Russian Museum. Individual items are presented in the collections of the State Hermitage, GMZ Tsarskoye Selo, GMZ Peterhof, MMC Kuskovo, GIM, as well as private collections in Russia and abroad.
