2023: Sollers buys Russian business Isuzu
On July 14, 2023, Sollers announced the purchase of the Russian business of the Japanese automaker Isuzu Motors. The sale of Isuzu Rus JSC is closed. The financial component of the agreement has not been disclosed.
The Russian company said that after the purchase of Isuzu Rus, Sollers will supply parts for Isuzu trucks for warranty and service. In addition, Sollers intends to resume the work of the company's assembly site in Ulyanovsk "in order to preserve jobs and ensure the utilization of existing production facilities," the company's press service added.
The Isuzu assembly site has been operating in Ulyanovsk since 2006. The carmaker was engaged in the production of pickups, trucks and special equipment. In 2021, it produced about 3,700 small and large trucks. Before the sale of assets to Sollers, Isuzu production in Russia accounted for about 1% of the company's global production. The range of commercial Isuzu equipment included a 3.5 to 33 ton gross weight chassis, as well as D-Max pickups. The brand's dealer network consisted of about 100 centers in the Russian Federation, Belarus, Armenia and Kazakhstan.
Isuzu's final decision to leave the Russian market on July 14, 2023 was first reported by the Japanese news agency Kyodo. According to him, the decision of the automaker is associated with the situation around Ukraine, as well as with the cessation of supplies of parts and components in the face of logistics problems.
The publication recalls that the company planned to increase the production of trucks in the Russian Federation to 5 thousand per year. After the shutdown of production in Russia in March 2023, Isuzu has repeatedly confirmed that it continues to work in the Russian market. The Ulyanovsk plant was idle, but the company continued to pay wages to workers.[1]
2022: Suspension of car production amid Russia's special operation in Ukraine
The Japanese automaker Isuzu Motors in September 2022 is considering the possibility of stopping the production of its cars at production facilities in Ulyanovsk due to the inability to supply components. In the spring of 2022, after the start of a special operation of the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine, the Russian division of the company - Isuzu Rus JSC - suspended the production of cars at the Ulyanovsk plant.
