2025: Opening a new terminal with an automatic passport control system
An innovative Sapsan automatic passport control system has been launched at Yekaterinburg Koltsovo Airport, which allows air passengers to independently cross the state border without the participation of border guards. Total investments in customs modernization amounted to more than ₽2,7 billion, the airport said on July 23, 2025.
According to Rossiyskaya Gazeta, the Ural air gates became the first regional airport to introduce biometric control on the line of international flights. Similar systems operate in the capital Sheremetyevo and were launched in Vnukovo a week earlier.
The minister transport Russia Andrey Nikitin noted that the passage system appeared biometrics in one of the largest regional airports. Koltsovo is increasing international traffic in terms of passenger traffic, and the minister has repeatedly used this airport.
Large-scale technical re-equipment of the checkpoint across the border was carried out without stopping the terminal. Thanks to the modernization, the capacity of the international terminal has almost doubled - up to 2.2 thousand passengers per hour.
Acting Governor of the Sverdlovsk Region Denis Pasler stressed that these are additional opportunities that will favorably affect the comfort for passengers and will solve the problem of increasing passenger traffic. The figure of 8 million passengers shows that residents of the Urals and neighboring regions have the opportunity to actively travel.
During the modernization, smart digital terminals were installed in Koltsovo, which tripled the ability to pass passport control. All engineering systems have also been updated and logistics have been improved to separate passenger flows.
Passengers traveling to the countries of the Customs Union go to the departure halls in a separate corridor. For travelers to these states in Koltsovo in 2025, a new fourth hall of increased comfort "Agat" was opened, named after one of the Ural art stones.[1]
