2018: Start of the LF Energy organization

In July, 2018 the non-profit consortium Linux Foundation created the LF Energy organization which will be engaged in development of the open source software for the energy sector.

Within LF Energy the projects covering the different directions — from creation of adaptive systems of power supply before process automation of management of generation and transmission of energy will move ahead. The coalition was entered by the operator of RTE power supply networks, largest in Europe, who reported Linux Foundation and opened source texts of three products:

Was engaged in Linux Foundation in development of the free software for power
  • OperatorFabric is building block system for automation of work of operators of power networks, water supply systems and other utility communications;

  • Let’s Coordinate is the solution based on OperatorFabric for coordination of work of the systems of power supply, the organization of interaction of services and information analysis about an infrastructure status;

  • PowSyBl Framework is a set of components for creation of the high-performance computing platforms allowing to model and simulate work of power networks.

As the chief executive of LF Energy Shuli Goodman told the eWeek edition, the new initiative will support numerous independent projects in the field of power industry, like Hyperledger, Cloud Native Computing Foundation and LF Networking.

Linux Foundation developed similar associations in other sectors, including automotive industry, financial services, cloud computing and network technologies earlier.

According to Gudman, Open Source model, on which will place emphasis of LF Energy, will allow to cut down expenses on software development and to reduce difficulties of integration at not differentiating levels. As a result suppliers of power generating systems will be able to bring very quickly products to the market, to be scaled and effectively to develop business, she added.[1]
