2019: As May Group tried to create IT-Business and that from this left

The corporate Chief information officer of May company Evgeny Mikhalev, speaking at the TAdviser SummIT 2019 conference, shared experience of attempt of entry into the market of IT outsourcing. This business case is remarkable, including, the fact that the activity bringing May the main part of turnover is production of tea and instant coffee. In this niche May - one of the largest players in Russia.

In addition to tea and coffee the company also develops an investment portfolio in the field of power, invests a venture capital to the sector of high technologies, develops business in development and real estate administration.

A few years ago May created the IT company for service of internal needs for IT and rendering outsourcing services to foreign market. It is called "May-Tek". Problems of new structure included development of the industry mobile solution and infrastructure projects, custom development, partnership with vendors, sale of licenses, technical support and projects of automation of parent corporation.

As a result after 2-3 years of work the niche in foreign market was found only by the industry solution developed in the "May-Tek" for mobile trade intended for distributors. It had several clients. Revenue was generated also by 1-2 projects on custom development. But in general, one may say, IT and outsourcing business did not "fly up", and this direction was frozen.


Evgeny Mikhalev explained that "May-Tek" as the outsourcer faced the high competition in the market of custom development, low marginality of license contracts, high staff costs and the conflicts with resource allocation.

After freezing of the direction of IT services for foreign market in May there was an insourcing division for closing of a part of IT requirements. And for other works the company began to address IT outsourcing. According to Evgeny Mikhalev, in general it is more preferable model for the company, than insourcing.

TAdviser SummIT took place in Moscow on May 29, 2019 and attracted about 610 participants - heads and experts of IT departments of the largest companies and the state departments of Russia, representatives of IT developer and contractors. During the action the prospects of digital transformation of business and state agencies, development of technologies, products and services were discussed. In a plenary part and five thematic sections more than 70 reports were heard. The action took place Sokolniki in 5 halls of Holiday Inn.
