Megogo unveils style update and announces set-top boxes
The changes affected not only brand updates, but also the visualization of the service as a whole. The company believes that these innovations will allow the user to better understand the service and its capabilities.
"For us, this is a conscious and necessary step, because MEGOGO, as a project, has long gone beyond the usual understanding of the" online cinema, "comments Viktor Chekanov. The service began its work in 2011 in 15 countries of the post-Soviet space. For 6 years of operation, MEGOGO has scaled its activities around the world and now works with several digital products at once: VOD content available to users using advertising, transaction and subscription models; broadcasting TV channels - being the first online cinema to launch TV, today more than 200 TV channels broadcast for users in the service; in 2015, the service released the first VR application for the mobile platform, and in 2016 began broadcasting cultural events.
The company plans to release monobrand MEGOGO BOX consoles on sale, where all products of the service (cinema, TV, broadcasts) will be available. Until now, this market has developed through operator activities. The company believes that this product will help popularize the service among those who still use traditional methods of viewing content - TVs without the Smart-TV function. MEGOGO CEO in Russia, Viktor Chekanov explains: "According to our estimates, such TVs in the country have the ability to connect set-top boxes, but do not have SMART-TV, more than 55 million, and the need for entertainment is just as great. Therefore, our main goal is to make these entertainment accessible to everyone, through one entry point - MEGOGO. "
The sale of single-brand boxes will be carried out throughout Russia through electronic and traditional retail channels, as well as through its own service. The cost of the "box" will not exceed 4999 rubles, while the video service takes over the cost of delivery to anywhere in the country. Together with the console, customers will receive an additional 12 months of access to the subscription, which already includes both films and TV channels.
Payment Security Certificate
Megogo's video service received a certificate of compliance with the PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) in the spring of 2017. The online cinema passed the corresponding audit, scanning the information infrastructure of the service and conducting specialized trainings for employees.
The company received the second level of certification, which will allow it to process up to 6 million card transactions per year, the Megogo press service said. Representatives of the service hope that this step, among other things, will attract those who may have wanted to buy earlier, but were wary of any transactions online.
2016
Revenue growth of 71.5%
The service managed to gain 719.3 million rubles (excluding VAT), which is 71.5% more than in 2015 (then it was 419.4 million rubles).
Megogo continued to grow revenue from user payments. If in 2015 they occupied a share of 11% in the total revenue structure of an online cinema, then in 2016 - already 20.18%. And here it is easy to calculate that the service earned 145.1 million rubles on paid transactions last year, while in 2015 - over 46 million rubles.
It is noted that the volume of the paying audience over the past year has grown by 170%, and the ARPPU (average revenue per paying user) indicator - by 31%. The number of users making 2 or more purchases also increased - by 41%.
The service does not disclose the volume of the paying audience, as well as the ARPPU indicator in money, but in an interview with Cable Worker[2], a Megogo[3] said that most of his payments are subscription. Namely, 14% of these 20.18% are SVOD, 3% are TVOD and another 3% are EST.
The lion's share of transactional purchases (we are talking about TVOD/EST) is about 80%, it falls on foreign content. Despite the fact that there is more Russian content in the Megogo library - 58% versus 42% of foreign content. The online cinema explains this alignment in transactions by the fact that the service is aimed at a Russian-speaking user and therefore offers most of the domestic content according to the advertising model.
In general, 72% of the Megogo catalog (which is 78 thousand video units) is offered on the AVOD model, and 28% on the paid one. Compared to 2015, the catalog of paid products increased by 60%.
Megogo has taken up film distribution
In March 2016, Megogo video service officially announced the start of its own film distribution division MEGOGO Distribution in order to expand its business in the segment of independent film distribution for Russian-speaking markets. The new direction was headed by Katerina Morozova, who had previously been involved in rental at Volga and A Company. The current shareholders of the video version became the owners of the MEGOGO Distribution division, and Vladimir Artemenko, the founder of TOPFILM Distribution, became the co-owner.
As part of a strategic partnership with TOPFILM, the new video service division will take over the film distribution of some of the films, as well as replenish its package with new releases. "We plan to purchase all types of rights, therefore, when sublicensing VOD content, MEGOGO Distribution will be guided solely from the considerations of financial expediency," explains Chekanov.
According to MEGOGO, the new division is a film distribution company, so windows of different types of rights will be determined in strict accordance with contracts with copyright holders and, first of all, without prejudice to cinema rental.
2015
Revenue growth of 86%
At the end of 2015, the service's revenue in Russia amounted to 419.4 million rubles, which is 86% more than in 2015 (it turns out that at the end of 2014, the revenue of an online cinema in Russia was about 225.5 million rubles).
If we talk about the structure of income, then most of them - about 89% (i.e. 373.3 million rubles), fell on advertising, the remaining 11-plus percent (or over 46 million rubles) - on user payments. Although the year before last, user payments occupied a share of only 2% of the company's total revenue (4.5 million rubles). Thus, the revenue of the online cinema from the paid model of monetization of content increased almost 12 times over the year, while SVOD showed an increase of 7 times, and TVOD/EST - 5 times. Megogo management connects such interest in paid products with the innovations of the service and the increase in the volume of the library due to major innovations and the content of independent studios.
Advertisement also showed growth - by 66%. "Despite the negative macroeconomic conditions, we, together with our seller, managed to significantly increase our advertising sales indicators compared to the previous year," comments Viktor Chekanov, General Director of the Megogo online cinema in Russia.
