2023: "Exmo" bought 51% of Popcorn Books

Eksmo bought 51% of Popcorn Books, which became known on August 10, 2023. The company did not disclose the financial terms of the transaction.

When agreeing on the value of the transaction, a "potential drop in revenue" was taken into account in the first half of 2023, the press service of Eksmo told RBC. She also noted that the group became a member of the shareholders of Popcorn Books for strategic reasons: the publisher seeks to expand "the youth readership and their purchasing activity." Eksmo will be responsible for building the distribution of the assortment and will become a source of investment "to form a new author's portfolio that meets the public demand and interests of the target audience," the company added.

The publishing house noted that they entered into an agreement with Popcorn Books on non-interference in editorial policy. According to Dmitry Protopopov, executive director of Popcorn Books, the holding's capabilities will allow Popcorn Books to access "new tools for purchasing rights, distribution and production." It is planned to add novels by African and South American authors to the publishing house's portfolio, said Alexandra Shipetina, director of the Eksmo publishing house.

According to Mikhail Burmistrov, CEO of INFOLine Analytics, the cost of Popcorn Books as of early 2023 could be up to 100 million rubles. "If we talk about the current assessment, then a share of 51% could be acquired in the range from 40 to 60 million rubles, taking into account the reduction in sales of the publishing house," the expert said. Investbankir Ilya Shumov noted that the value of such an asset "can be estimated by the amount of one or two annual revenues in 2022, taking into account a certain discount, which takes into account both a decrease in revenue in 2023 and the negative associated with the bestseller" Summer in Pioneer Tie. " He believes that 51% of Popcorn Books could cost from 15 million to 35 million rubles[1]"
