The Commissioner for Human Rights in St. Petersburg. The institute of the representative in in St. Petersburg began to work in 1997.
The position of the Commissioner for Human Rights in St. Petersburg is founded by the Charter of St. Petersburg according to the Federal constitutional law "About the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation" for the purpose of providing guarantees of the state protection of the rights and freedoms of citizens in St. Petersburg.
At implementation of the powers the Representative is independent and is not accountable to any state bodies and officials of St. Petersburg.
Activity of the Commissioner for Human Rights in St. Petersburg is directed on:
- assistance to recovery of the violated rights of citizens;
- improvement of the mechanism of providing and protection of the rights of citizens;
- legal education of the population.
