History
2023: Chinese energy provider's $2.9 billion purchase of Peruvian assets
On April 7, 2023, the Italian energy company Enel S.p.A announced that its Peruvian division was selling its power distribution and supply assets. The buyer was China Southern Power Grid International (CSGI), China's largest energy provider.
The transaction amount will be $2.9 billion. The agreement provides that CSGI will acquire Enel Perú 's stakes in Enel Distribución Perú SAA (approximately 83.15% of the latter's share capital) and in Enel X Perù SAC (100% of the share capital). The transfer of assets requires regulatory approvals, including the competition authority in Peru, as well as the Chinese Foreign Investment Commission.
The deal is expected to be beneficial to both sides. In particular, Enel is implementing a debt reduction program, under which it intends to part with some assets - primarily in Latin America and Europe. CSGI, in turn, will be able to strengthen its position in the Latin American market.
Overall, the transaction is projected to reduce the group's consolidated net debt [Enel] by about €3.1 billion in 2023 and positively affect reported net income. No influence on the usual results of activities is expected, the report says. |
According to Enel itself, it serves over 1.5 million customers in Peru. In 2021, the company supplied 8.44 GVt·ch of electricity in this region. After the asset transfer is completed, Enel will focus on strengthening its position in six countries: Italy, Spain, the United States, Brazil, Chile and Colombia. At the end of 2022, Enel's net debt was approximately €60.1 billion, while the peak figure was recorded in September of the same year - almost €70 billion.[1]

On June 16, 2022, it was announced that the Italian Enel was selling its 56.43% stake in Enel Russia to Lukoil and the Gazprombank freesia fund.
Later, the deal to sell Russian energy assets to the Italian Enel - a controlling stake in Enel Russia - was frozen indefinitely due to a decree of the President of the Russian Federation, which until December 31, 2022 banned Western investors in the fuel and energy sector from leaving Russian business otherwise than by special permission.
