2019: Use of the tool for cracking of IT systems of state institutions of Baltimore

In May, 2019 hackers attacked computer systems of state bodies of the American city of Baltimore (State of Maryland). As a result of cyberattack all departmental systems, including e-mail and payment systems of the parking, taxes, housing and public utilities, etc. failed.

On May 7, 2019 criminals paralyzed work of state agencies by means of a virus racketeer and began to ask the redemption in the amount of $100 thousand in bitcoins.

The virus racketeer disconnected in the city all electronic systems in state agencies

As the The New York Times newspaper  (NYT) specifies, hackers cracked computers in state institutions of Baltimore using the EternalBlue program developed with assistance of the National Security Agency (NSA) of the USA.

In the publication it is specified that the U.S. intelligence applied EternalBlue in the prospecting and counterterrorist purposes within several years, however in 2017 access to EternalBlue was got by several hacker groupings.

Since that moment when this tool fell into hands of cybercriminals, it began to be used in North Korea, Russia and China with assistance of the governments of these states, approves the edition.

In total tens of hospitals, airports and industrial enterprises in several states of the USA suffered at once from the program created with assistance of the NSA. Explanations of how the program fell into hands of hackers, in National Security Agency do not give yet.

Besides, using the same program hackers blocked the systems of state agencies in several American cities from Pennsylvania to Texas. 

After failure of the IT system of the power began to create a set of free Gmail accounts. The automatic system of security of Google considered that accounts are created by robots and blocked them.

Journalists of NYT sent inquiries to FBI and the NSA, however did not wait for comments.[1]
