Biography

Carlo Canobbio (Carlo Canobbio; in Russian documents Canobi) [1741, Venice - 23.2 (7.3).1822, St. Petersburg], Italian violinist, composer, teacher.

He worked in Madrid, in 1773-1775. 1st violinist and bandmaster of the San Samuel Theater in Venice, where he collaborated with J. Paisiello, composed ballet and chamber music.

Since 1779 he lived in Russia, played in the first court orchestra, composed ballet music.

In 1785 he succeeded Paisiello as inspector of the Italian Opera Company.

Since 1795, bandmaster of the troupe of J. Astaritta in St. Petersburg.

In 1797 he was listed as a court teacher of guitar playing.

Compositions

Together with Giuseppe Sarti and V. A. Pashkevich, he wrote the music for the "historical presentation" "Initial Management of Oleg" on the text of Empress Catherine II (staged in 1790, St. Petersburg; the score was published in 1791).

Canobbio owns an overture, a march for wind and orchestral intermission based on the material of popular song melodies ["What was lower than the city of Saratov," "Zayinka, poplyashi," "At the valley," "Kamarinskaya" (curiously rethought in the genre of menueta), etc.].

Among the works are also:

  • ballets Don Juan (1781), Ariadne and Bacchus (1789), Pyramus and Tisba (1791), Castor and Pollux (1803; all - St. Petersburg);

  • 2 symphonies;

  • 6 duets for flute and violin (or violins; written in Madrid, published in Venice);

  • 6 sonatas for guitar and violin with surdina (1797);

  • polonaise for guitar and violin (1799);

  • vocal works.
