2025: Appointment as IT Department Chief Following High-Profile Cyber Attack

At the end of December 2025, it became known that Anton Matskevich, Deputy General Director for Information Technology and Information Security of Aeroflot, resigned from his post. Denis Popov will perform the relevant duties.

According to the Kommersant newspaper, Popov has been appointed director of Aeroflot's information systems department. Previously, he headed the IT subsidiary AFLT-Systems. The air carrier notes that the new leader "has all the necessary skills and experience in the development and implementation of digital projects in the group's companies."

Market participants associate personnel changes with a large-scale cyber attack on Aeroflot, which occurred at the end of July 2025. Then the company was forced to cancel or delay a large number of flights; the incident disrupted a number of key IT systems. Experts say that the head of the IT department "could not but be held responsible for an incident of this scale," which entailed significant reputational costs.

On the other hand, the head of cybersecurity of another airline emphasizes that, in general, the reaction of Aeroflot's IT specialists to the incident and the power outage "was an impeccable practice of the attack and allowed to preserve most of the IT infrastructure." In addition, the interviewed experts note that not a single top manager can be fully insured against a repetition of such a situation, since the number and complexity of cyber attacks on airlines are growing rapidly.

Aeroflot itself adds that under Matskevich, the company has "a significant breakthrough in the development of the company's IT direction in terms of import substitution and the implementation of the group's digital transformation strategy." It is said that the top manager left his post of his own free will.^[1]
