Dismissal from the Ministry of Energy, house arrest

In early February 2025, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin fired Deputy Energy Minister Sergei Mochalnikov, who is under house arrest on charges of abuse of power. The corresponding order was published on the official website of legal acts at the end of January 2025. Mochalnikov faces up to four years in prison under the article on abuse of power. The investigation claims that he and his colleagues entered into contracts to liquidate unprofitable mines, but the work was not completed. The damage in the case amounted to more than 500 million rubles.

Sentence - 1.5 years in prison

On April 23, 2025 Moscow , the Meshchansky District Court sentenced former Deputy Minister power engineering specialists RUSSIAN FEDERATION Sergei Mochalnikov. He received 1.5 years in prison in the case of abuse of office.

Mochalnikov was detained in October 2024 in connection with an investigation into fraud on an especially large scale. According to the case file, in the period from 2014 to 2023, officials Ministry of Energy Russia concluded a number of contracts with controlled organizations in order to carry out contracting work to liquidate unprofitable and unpromising coal mines and open-pit mines. However, in fact, these works were not carried out in full. Nevertheless, the acts of their acceptance and expert opinions, which became the basis for the transfer of funds, were agreed and signed by representatives of the department.

Deputy Minister of power of the Russian Federation Mochalnikov sentenced to 1.5 years in prison

According to law enforcement agencies, the case refers to the theft of more than 175 million rubles allocated by the Ministry of Energy for the restructuring of the coal industry. In the fall of 2024, Mochalnikov was sent under house arrest, and later Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin dismissed him from his post. The official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia Irina Volk stated that the operatives "documented the possible involvement in embezzlement of budget funds on an especially large scale of officials from among the leadership of the Ministry of Energy."

In accordance with the court's decision, Mochalnikov was found guilty of committing a crime under Part 1 of Article 285 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (abuse of office). He was sentenced to imprisonment for a period of one year and six months with serving in a penal colony. Mochalnikov's case was considered in a special order - without examining the evidence, since he pleaded guilty.[1]
