2017: The car - the smartphone on wheels

"In several years automatic update of the software will become available to each new car, – Dr. Markus Heine, the board member of Bosch says. – Wireless updates are very convenient for drivers. Besides, Bosch provides reliability and high speed of updates". The company developed all necessary functionality for wireless updating of cars – control block and information and communication infrastructure of the car and also modern technologies of enciphering and a cloud service of Bosch of IoT (Internet of Things).

Even more electronic equipment, there are more functions, it is more than software opportunities – the car turns into the smartphone on wheels. Upgrade of the software of the car becomes very important aspect of development of the industry. New features will be able to provide even more conveniences after purchase of the vehicle. Cars are equipped in one hundred control blocks. Even in compact vehicles there are from 30 to 50 blocks. The software manages practically each function in the car. Besides, more and more vehicles are connected to the Internet, to other cars and infrastructure now. It can become the reason emergence of weak points in the software and, as a result, to different frauds. The software update through cloud services assumes the solution which allows to upgrade the car and to increase its security. "The cars are driven via the software more than 15 years or more. Wireless software updating is a contribution of Bosch to upgrade of the software of vehicles that eliminates need for visit of auto repair shops", – Dr. M. Heine says. Besides, updating using a cloud service assumes an opportunity to add even more functions to the systems of the car, expanding possibilities of the vehicle. If the necessary equipment is already installed, new features of the software can be tested and loaded. Thus, for example, it is possible to activate function of deduction on a lane or function of the help at the parking.

Not only drivers will benefit from a wireless software update: in 2015 15% of responses in the automobile industry of the USA were connected with software errors. Four years before the given indicator was only 5% according to researches of the USA founded on data of National administration by security by the movement on roads (NHTSA). "For car makers and their clients revocable campaigns are a huge waste of time and money, and online updating will allow to lower considerably these indicators", – Dr. M. Heine adds.

Updates directly through a cloud service

The wireless software update occurs via the smartphone of the driver or the information and entertaining system of the car where necessary functions for loading are selected. This information is transferred to a cloud service which functions as app store, supporting updating and guaranteeing loading process of the software in the systems of the vehicle. Also data can be updated during the movement of the car, or at night when the vehicle is on the parking. As soon as the car is in safe conditions (for example, on the parking), the software update is established on the corresponding control block and is instantly activated.

Security

Security and interaction of automatic electronics, cloud services and the software are important for due functioning of wireless updating. The data security is ensured by the last technologies of enciphering which are developed by Escrypt, Bosch subsidiary company. The complex architecture of security with the encoded information protects data transmission from unauthorized access. Protocols and filters of security serve as protection against the hacker attacks in the cloud interface of the car. To show reliability and high update rate of the software, Bosch uses quickly updated technologies, such as delta mechanism and compression engines. It allows to accelerate process of updating and to reduce costs as amounts of data for transfer decrease. One more security measure – a possibility of consecutive updating. In case of a problem, process of updating can be suspended and configured. The Bosch Automotive Cloud Suite platform is a key technology of work of wireless updating. Its elements provide accomplishment of all functions for wireless updating – drivers, car makers and directly with vehicles.

Agreement of Software AG and Bosch

The digital business platform of Software AG company will become a universal component of a cloud of Bosch of IoT with modules for data analysis and decision making in real time. The possibility of processing, the analysis and visualization of data, important for decision making, is in real time simply necessary for the tools of Internet of Things using large volumes of data. Besides, one of main goals of this cooperation is increase in availability of tools of predictive analytics which can be developed by means of the digital business platform of Software AG company. Also the Bosch company will use means of storage and data processing of production of Software AG company for accomplishment of assessment in real time. The scalability of a cloud of Bosch of IoT is a crucial element in creation of an open ecosystem for different partners and users. The universal module of integration from Software AG company which is already used in Bosch company provides integration of systems and work of all components. Thanks to this module all elements of an ecosystem of Internet of Things can interact in real time by means of a cloud of Bosch of IoT.

The Bosch company is engaged in development at all three technological levels of Internet of Things. The Bosch company makes fixed assets of integration, such as sensors and software, but also develops new services on the basis of these technologies. Suppliers of technologies and services use a cloud of Bosch of IoT for start of different applications in the field of mobile and industrial technologies, "the connected houses" and "the connected buildings".

For clients and partners of Bosch and Software AG it is cooperation means increase in convenience and speed of development, use and availability of new services of Internet of Things on the basis of a cloud of Bosch of IoT. One of main advantages for clients and partners is continuous improvement of functions of the platform and development of new solutions of Internet of Things that eventually means more opportunities in competitive struggle. Production, logistics and retail are the three industries which will get most of all advantages thanks to developments of new solutions of Internet of Things. Data analysis in real time by means of sensors of the environment and the system of risk assessment in combination with tools of predictive analytics represent a basis for development and provide fall forward, efficiency and safety of processes of supply, production and logistics. Intelligent tools of Internet of Things provide all necessary data and automatically help to eliminate defects of a value chain. Thanks to a combination of sensors of the environment for real-time analysis and to other components these two companies developed the joint application which, for example, will help to reduce the number of necessary checks in a manufacturing sector. On the basis of the data obtained from sensors it is possible to make the decision on whether it is necessary to execute an additional number of quality checks in a certain case.

Bosch IoT-microservices are available on SAP HANA Cloud Platform

In September, 2016 it became known of partnership of SAP and Bosch: customers will be able to use the SAP HANA database on the Bosch IoT Cloud platform. Thus, it will be possible to process large volumes of data for IoT-applications in real time. Bosch IoT-microservices will become available on SAP HANA Cloud Platform to a connectivity of different devices and components. It includes safe and more effective connections of vehicles, a production equipment and tools to different platforms.

For example, the connected wireless screw drivers can announce with an accuracy of centimeter the arrangement to a production system which then will define the moment to start accomplishment of the corresponding task. As a result the production efficiency increases. Databases, such as SAP HANA, are a necessary condition for storage, processing, the analysis and providing large volumes of information in the connected industry. All systems developed by Bosch and SAP are concentrated first of all on security and confidentiality of data. Both companies protect information of customers by means of the latest technologies. Clients can solve, provide personal data or not.

One more specific example of cooperation between two international companies — position data for auto-loaders which increased transparency and efficiency in the field of logistics. By means of the coordinated IIC system for tracking and control of products Track&Trace, it is possible to define location of loaders in aviation hangars, in big warehouses or industrial facilities in real time and with an accuracy of centimeter now. Zeno Track, a startup based by Bosch finds loaders using cameras, GPS, laser scanners, radio and motion sensors. Data on location are transmitted through Bosch IOT Cloud in Vehicle Insights SAP application for management of the transport park. As a result, vehicle fleet can be managed more reasonably and thus which will better support planning and accomplishment of transport orders or diagrams of maintenance. It reduces costs and increases efficiency. Cooperation between Bosch and SAP shows how interaction of sensors and the software allows to create new services.

Bosch and SAP are the European consortium members of the industrial Internet. This international network of the companies and the universities conducts implementation of Internet of Things in several areas including in industrial production.

Sensors detect empty seats on the intercepting parking

Where the next empty parking space is? The system of Bosch is ready to give the answer to this permanently topical issue. The sensors which are built in 15 intercepting parking along lines of S2 and S3 local trains in Stuttgart can define whether there are empty seats on the parking. These data go via the Internet to a cloud of Bosch of IoT from where then come to every minute updated map of empty parking spaces. Such information is provided through the application and the website of transport management of Stuttgart (VVS). The main advantage of a system is that it saves time of people. Drivers, precisely knowing that on the intercepting parking there are empty seats, will use more willingly public transport, thereby unloading city streets. Parkings of the different sizes participate in a pilot project: so, in the smallest of them 49 places, and in the biggest — 520 places. Installation of sensors will begin in 2016, and the project will last till June, 2018.

Places on the parking for tired long-distance truck drivers

It is hard for drivers of heavy-load cars to find the vacation spot along the highway, such platforms usually are hopelessly crowded. Especially it is noticeable at night — in that time when theft probability is high. Bosch offers the companies of cargo transportation, operators of transport parks and independent carriers service of armoring of the parking. Thanks to it drivers of trucks will be able to make a reservation on the secured parking in advance. In search time of the parking the onboard system of the truck sends to service of data on location of the car and a request for the parking. In service search of the next parking, data on which go directly to the navigation system of the truck, is executed. At the same time armoring and cashless payment are automatic. This system will be integrated into a cloud of Bosch of IoT in the summer of 2016.

Discounts for careful drivers

The largest insurance company of Germany reduces insurance cost for the owners of cars preferring careful and responsible driving. For this purpose the division of Bosch Automotive Aftermarket offers technology of the module of control of connection (CCU). The CCU on-board unit is connected to the system of the car via the diagnostic OBD connector, collecting data on acceleration, the maximum and angular speed. Via the built-in SIM card this information in encrypted form goes on a cellular network to a computer system. On the basis of these data the insurance company creates profiles of drivers, offering the most careful of them profitable discounts.
