2023: Release of 1 million subwoofers that light up for no reason
At the end of June 2023, Bose recalls more than 1 million subwoofers, which were part of the home theater systems Acoustimass, Lifestyle and Companion.
The Bose website says the systems were sold at Bose, Best Buy, Circuit City, Sam's Club, Sears and other electronics stores across the U.S. Sales of products were carried out through the www.bose.com website from January 1994 to April 2007 at a price of $220 to $2.2 thousand. According to the manufacturer, these systems, which have been popular since the early 2000s, are distinguished by high sound quality and durability.
According to The Verge, the reason for the mass recall was 21 reports of the ignition or melting of bass components of subwoofers. Since June 29, 2023, the company has already begun to recall them. In some cases, the fire caused damage to surrounding objects, but there were no injuries to people or pets recorded as of June 30, 2023, related to this problem.
A wide range of low-frequency modules from various systems falls under the recall. Users can see all relevant product names on the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website. Bose has published a page to determine if users have affected equipment. Users need to check the serial numbers of their devices to see if they are at risk.
This is not Bose's first voluntary recall related to subwoofers, in 2012 the company announced a potential fire hazard when these products were used with high-voltage sockets outside the United States. For 2023, the CPSC says Bose is ready to repair the affected modules, but also offers a 40% discount on product replacement.[1][2]
