Direct connection to London and Frankfurt
Selectel in September reported connecting to two new traffic exchange points: DE-CIX in Frankfurt and LINX in London. Expanding the peer-to-peer network speeds up access to resources hosted on provider platforms from anywhere on the planet.
Connections to DE-CIX (German Internet Exchange) and LINX (London Internet Exchange) were made as part of the Selectel IP network development program. The choice is due to the uniqueness and volume of Internet traffic passing through them. To date, DE-CIX is the largest, and LINX is the third largest point of exchange in Europe.
Doubling the capacity of the data center in Moscow
In the spring of 2016, Selectel completed work to expand its Moscow data center. The number of server racks has doubled. The company will lease part of the newly introduced capacities, the other part will be used to develop its own IaaS (infrastructure as a service) projects.
As a result of redevelopment and conversion of the premises of the Berzarin data center, a server room with 80 server racks (47U) with a maximum power of 5 kW was created. Its reliability level meets the requirements of TIA TIER and 3 standards. Some of the new capacities are reserved for the expansion of Selectel hosting and cloud services, such as dedicated ones, servers Virtual private cloud and cloud servers. Vscale Colocation services will also be provided here.
Fault tolerance of the server system is provided by redundancy of engineering system components according to the N + 1 scheme and the presence of two independent power supply channels. Communication channels with the largest traffic exchange point in Moscow MMTS-9 reserved according to the 2N scheme. This was achieved due to the presence of Selectel's own fiber-optic data network in the capital.
Neural Network and Big Data Solution
In July 2016, Selectel announced a service for renting dedicated servers with graphics cards. These servers are best suited for demanding performance and memory bandwidth tasks. Selectel is the first Russian hosting provider to offer equipment of this class.
Due to the peculiarities of the architecture, processors of modern video cards (GPUs) have more processing power. They repeatedly speed up computing, which is critical for the work of neural network algorithms, modeling and calculating physical processes, design, processing media content in real time, financial analytics, etc. Projects in these areas require a special infrastructure: standard servers or public clouds do not fully meet their needs.

Improve DNS reliability
On September 30, 2015, Selectel became a partner of the European Internet registrar RIPE NNC and placed a root DNS server node in the data center. With this, Selectel indicated its contribution to improving the reliability of the global DNS system.
Network Interaction Diagram with DNS Servers (2014)
Failure-free operation of the domain name system (DNS) is critical for the normal functioning of the Internet. It converts symbolic domain names into IP addresses. Thirteen root servers provide DNS. A system of service nodes is built around each root server. This expands the geography of DNS and increases its reliability.
Each root server is indicated by Latin letters from A to M and is controlled by a separate operator. The RIPE NNC European Internet Registrar manages the K-server. Selectel, in agreement with RIPE NNC, placed one of the nodes of the root server in its data center.
Alexander Vechersky, the director of public relations, "Selectel" stated: "For us, this project is an act of responsible business. Market leadership imposes certain obligations on the company, in particular, to the industry and the community. When it became known that RIPE was opening a competition to host the root server node, DNS we immediately applied. As a result, their choice fell on. "Selectel" This fact is an unbiased confirmation of the reliability and stability of the infrastructure by "Selectel" professionals. This is an absolutely non-profit story. "Selectel" purchased and placed all necessary equipment free of charge. So the company contributed to increasing the level of reliability and fault tolerance of the global system. " DNS
Change Setup Payments
Hosting provider Selectel updated the lease conditions for dedicated servers in February 2015: it canceled the installation payment for all fixed hardware configurations. For customers, this means simultaneous savings of up to six thousand rubles when ordering a service. Installation payments are canceled for all currently presented configurations, including the latest servers with the Intel Xeon E5v3 processor family and DDR4 memory.
The lack of initial costs and prices in rubles make Selectel a profitable alternative to hosting providers from Europe and the United States. Other advantages of leasing dedicated servers in Selectel include unlimited Internet traffic without hidden conditions, the ability to remotely manage equipment, payment for services through global and local payment systems (Yandex.Money, WebMoney, RBK Money), round-the-clock technical support in Russian.
2012: Service malfunctions September 24-25
The problems began on Monday evening on September 24 (downtime 22:00 - 23:10). From the outside, it looked like a loss of connectivity with the St. Petersburg segment of the network. This failure entailed problems in all our Internet services in; St. Petersburg the Moscow segment of the network, as well as local server ports, continued to work. Also unavailable (DNS ns1.selectel.org and ns2.selectel.org), which are located in St. Petersburg, the Moscow DNS (ns3.selectel.org) did not hurt this failure. Due to the lack of connectivity, access to the site and control panel disappeared, the main load was on telephony, and therefore many customers could not wait for the answer[1]
When analyzing the situation, it was possible to immediately establish that the problem was caused by incorrect operation of the aggregation layer switches, which are two Juniper EX4500 combined into a single virtual chassis. Visually, everything looked quite functional, but when connected to the console, many messages were found, which, however, did not allow to accurately determine the cause of the problem.
Action taken
Despite the fact that there was a reserve of equipment in the data centers, the network was built with redundancy, as well as a number of other factors that ensure stability and uninterrupted operation, the current situation became unexpected for us.
As a result, it was decided to carry out the following activities:
- Enhanced verification of optical transceivers and network equipment in a test environment;
- Armored Kevlar fiber optic cable in areas at risk of damage as a result of hooligan actions;
- Accelerate the completion of cloud server infrastructure upgrades.
2011
Regional Computing Center - Dubrovka village
On July 8, 2011, a new information and computing center (data center) was launched in the Leningrad Region, in the village of Dubrovka, in the server rooms of which 250 server cabinets (racks) are concentrated. This data center is the second half of the Regional Computing Center complex. The complex is the largest data center in the Northwest region. In total, it contains 490 47U server cabinets, 5MW of power and 1,550 sq.m. of server space.
All key elements of the complex are redundant according to the N + 1 scheme, which allows any repair or maintenance work to be carried out without interruptions. In the near future, the computing center will be certified according to the international TIA-942 standard. The availability of this certificate will allow you to officially assign the Tier 3 reliability level to this complex.
The complex is designed to accommodate server and telecommunication equipment of clients of the Selectel data center network. Despite its distance from St. Petersburg, our clients gladly agree to place their equipment in the "Regional Computing Center," because the complex has its own redundant optical channels to the main traffic exchange points of St. Petersburg and a round-the-clock technical support service operating according to the "remote hands" scheme.
The general characteristics of all data centers of the Selectel data center network are: capacity - 10.8 MW, number of server cabinets - 1130, area of server rooms - 3950 sq. M.
