In January 2024, the Moscow company "Rukep" presented a new version of the ultrasonic vision system for the visually impaired "Echo Sonar." The device is a flexible rim that can be attached to the headgear. The device is based on the principle of echolocation.
In Echo Sonar, an ultrasonic location is used, similar to the echolocation of bats. Bats cannot see and orient themselves in space using high-frequency sound signals, determining the location of objects from the time of receipt of the reflected wave.
"Sonar Echo" converts the carrier frequency of reflected ultrasonic pulses into an audible range, and thereby allows the user to hear an audio picture of the environment - echo. The tone and intensity of the signal transmits information about the distance and size of all objects located in the sonar range, so the user can hear and distinguish a person, car, wall and other objects.

Initially, the Echo Sonar of the Rucep company was made in the form of a helmet, since it is fundamentally important to use it in the head area. With the development of new materials and an element base, the developers made the device in the form of a flexible rim that can be fixed on the headdress. The device was tested in Kazan, where blind participants in clinical trials were trained to decrypt ultrasound signals. After two months of training, they could accurately determine the dimensions, location of the objects and the configuration of the space as a whole.[1]
