GS Group SSD is a line of solid state drives for the client and enterprise segments.

History of development

2024: Installing SSD GS027 on Aquarius PCs, Laptops and All-in-Ones

The Aquarius company, a Russian developer and manufacturer of computing equipment, will offer computers equipped with domestic SSDs manufactured by GS Nanotech (part of the GS Group).

As representatives of the GS Group told the TAdviser portal on October 15, 2024, SSDs will GS027 be installed in personal computers, laptops and all-in-ones under the Aquarius brand. As of October 2024, the product line of these client devices has about 30 models intended for the company's corporate clients.

GS027 SSDs in the M.2 form factor were launched in 2023. They are focused on compact laptops, tablets and PCs and, according to GS Nanotech, can provide high speed and performance.

Domestic SSDs are included in the point system for assessing the localization of industrial products of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia.

2022: Testing with Raidix ERA Software

On August 1, 2022, RAIDIX and GS Nanotech presented the results of system performance tests using Russian GS SSDs and PORaidix ERA.

So, in a system of 8 NVMe disks in the RAID6 configuration, engineers managed to get local performance to read 2262000 IOPS on random access and 23400 MB/s on serial access, which is actually 100% of the declared GS Nanotech performance of "raw" disks. Per record, the results were 154,000 IOPS on random access and 6187MB/s on sequential access. At random loads, the size of the 4KB block was used, and at consecutive loads - 1MB.

The achievement of high utilization rates of drives despite using the RAID6 level was made possible by the implementation in RAIDIX ERA of a special approach to parallelizing calculations and using lockless datapath, which significantly reduces the data transfer path. Dmitry Luchko, head of RAIDIX Solutions, noted the possibility of using RAIDIX ERA to ensure the operation of data loggers on unmanned vehicles, traffic analyzers, to implement supercomputer computing and solve various business problems based on fast transaction processing and working with databases.

Experts praised the tests, drive capabilities and ERA PO RAIDIX.

Successful test results prove that GS Nanotech and RAIDIX are ready to provide market participants with solutions for implementing performance-intensive projects. Separately, I note that the characteristics of the GS SSD drives meet the declared and are not FOB, and are also fully compatible with RAIDIX products,
said Dmitry Luchko.

As part of the testing, together with RAIDIX, it was practically confirmed that the tested GS SSD PCie/NVMe models are fully compatible with ERA PO RAIDIX, and their declared speed characteristics when working with this software even exceed passport performance, which confirms the high competitiveness of the product.
noted Alexander Stepnov, leading product manager of GS Nanotech.

2020: Inclusion in the register of industrial products produced in the territory of the Russian Federation

On July 13, 2020, it became known about the production of the first fully Russian solid-state drives. This status was given to the GS SSD model, developed by GS Nanotech (part of the GS Group), which received an opinion from the Ministry of Industry and Trade confirming the production of its own developed SSD in Russia.

The first SSD in the register of industrial products produced in the Russian Federation has a capacity of 240 GB, 3D MLC memory , SATA 3 data transfer interface (6 Gb/s) and M.2 2258 form factor. The manufacturer also draws attention to the following characteristics of the device:

SSD manufactured by GS Nanotech confirmed Russian origin
  • maximum sequential read speed - 450 MB/s;
  • Maximum sequential write speed - 480 MB/s
  • Maximum random read speed - 70000 IOPS
  • the maximum random write rate is 74,000 IOPS;
  • temperature range - 0... + 70 ° С;
  • resource - up to two cycles of rewriting the total volume of the drive per day;
  • redundancy factor - 1/16.

According to Fyodor  Boyarkov, Production Development Director of GS Group Holding, the inclusion of GS Nanotech solid-state drives in the register allows the company to take advantage of the preferences and support measures developed by the Government of the Russian Federation for domestic developers and manufacturers. By July 13, 2020, another GS drive model is being certified, the procedure is expected to be completed in August. In the future, it is planned to obtain such conclusions on all SSD models produced by GS Nanotech, he said.

 In tenders of public legal entities, Russian electronic products included in the register, including GS Nanotech solid-state drives, have a 30% preference: if the price for the supply of this product is higher than foreign, but within 30%, then domestic radio electronics wins.[1]

2019: Start of SSD production with PCI-e interface

In March 2019, the GS Nanotech Microelectronics Development and Production Center began production of solid state drives - SSD with PCI Express interface. It provides up to 5 times faster speed of arbitrary operations. The memory capacity of such SSDs reaches 2 TB.

PCI Express (PCI-e) is the interface through which an SSD connects to other devices. PCI-e allows you to exchange information at speeds up to 32 Gbps, while for SATA 3.0 this does not exceed 6 Gbps. PCI-e SSDs run on a special NVM Express protocol that supports multi-channel operation - several applications interact with memory at the same time, which speeds up the operation of the device and increases its reliability, since the channels reserve each other. As a result, the speed of arbitrary operations (a key indicator of the speed of the drive) for SSDs with PCI-e interface is up to 5 times higher compared to devices with SATA 3.0 interface, noted in GS Nanotech.

2018: Mass production launch

On February 20, 2018, GS Group announced the start of mass production of the first self-developed SSDs.

The full production cycle - device design, including the development, installation of components on the board, housing of memory modules, final assembly and packaging of products - is implemented at the facilities of the Technopolice GS innovation cluster (GS Group investment project in Gusev, Kaliningrad Region). Localization of the full development and production cycle in Russia ensures maximum data security, the company emphasized.

The capacities of Technopolice GS allow the production of more than 1 million devices per year. By the end of 2018, GS Group plans to bring to the market a line of solid-state drives with a capacity of up to 1 TB for various applications: workstations, servers, as well as DSS and other complex tiered systems that require storage of large amounts of information while increasing performance.

The devices of the line will be based on memory modules produced at Technopolice GS, which include the latest generation of 3D NAND memory crystals from world manufacturers. GS Nanotech specialists are launching ultra-dense crystal packaging technology, which, according to GS Group representatives, will provide "previously unattainable specific memory capacity of microcircuits."

The trend is obvious in the Russian market: in an effort to ensure maximum security of information storage, domestic companies transfer corporate data to Russian data centers and create their own data warehouses. The demand for domestic solid-state drives is growing, so the first Russian project to create an SSD, on which we are working, has great potential for further development, "said Evgeny Maslennikov, CEO of GS Nanotech.

2017: Release of the first serial sample

In 2017, the first production sample of a 256GB SSD in a 2.5in form factor was released. The devices use SATA 3.0 interface with a maximum data transfer rate of up to 6 Gb/s, the drive provides a maximum sequential read speed of up to 550 Mb/s and sequential write speed of up to 450 Mb/s.

According to the GS Group, in terms of their characteristics, the devices are not inferior to their foreign counterparts. It is possible to customize the equipment for specific customer requirements - both at the hardware and software levels.

2016: Start of SSD development project

In 2016, GS Group launched the first project in Russia for the development and mass production of solid-state drives for client and corporate segments - non-mechanical memory devices based on memory chips with a control controller.
