Approval by Rosstandart of GOSTs for laptops

On November 5, 2024, the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology of Russia announced the approval of two national standards for laptops - GOST R 71174-2024 and GOST R 71202-2024. They will take effect on January 1, 2025.

According to the press service of Rosstandart, the new standards for the first time introduce a single terminology for portable, semi-portable and mobile computers, as well as establish requirements for the security of devices. The head of Rosstandart Anton Shalaev said that the introduction of new requirements is an important step to improve the quality and safety of products on the Russian market.

Rosstandart approved GOSTs for laptops

According to approved documents, laptops are classified into five types: general purpose, gaming, educational, mobile graphics stations and devices for special operating conditions. The devices shall comply with the requirements of electrical and mechanical safety as per GOST IEC 60950-1.

The standards were developed by DEPO COMPUTER in the framework of the technical committee for standardization No. 166 with the participation of committees No. 022 and No. 019. Experts in the field of information technology and electronic devices took part in the development of documents.

Svetlana Legostaeva, General Director of the Computer Engineering Consortium, Chairman of the Computer Engineering Technical Standardization Committee, noted that these standards complement the existing base of GOSTs for computer equipment, including already approved documents for tablets, personal computers and server equipment.

The new standards impose technical requirements on laptop components, including webcams, touchpads and remote blocking tools. The procedure for conducting tests for impact resistance, autonomy of operation, power consumption and dust and moisture protection of devices is also determined.[1]

Growth in laptop sales in the first half of the year by 30% to 94 billion rubles

Sales of laptops in Russia in the first half of 2024 increased by 30% in monetary terms compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 94 billion rubles. This became known on July 4, 2024 from a study conducted by M.Video-Eldorado. In quantitative terms, the growth was 14%, and the total sales reached 1.4 million devices.

According to the study, Asus, Huawei, MSI, Lenovo, Honor and Apple became the most popular brands on the Russian market. At the same time, laptops with a screen diagonal of 16 inches were in greatest demand. Marvel Distribution experts note that the main growth drivers are online stores and marketplaces, to which customers are growing confidence. A significant role in increasing sales was played by various marketing promotions, including sales, cashbacks and bonus programs.

Sales of laptops in Russia in the first half of 2024 increased by 30% in monetary terms compared to the same period in 2023

An important trend in the laptop market was the increase in the share of domestic brands. According to Marvel Distribution estimates, their share increased by 53.6% and reached 12.9% of total sales. Among Russian manufacturers, Fplus, Dexp, ICL, Digma, Echips, Osio and Irbis are the most popular. The share of domestic laptops in monetary terms more than doubled and reached 20%. The main advantages of Russian brands were the availability and absence of problems with warranty and service.

Independent analyst Aleksei Boyko emphasizes that Russian and conditionally Russian brands are actively displacing imports in the budget segment. However, in the premium and gaming segments, domestic manufacturers are still poorly represented.

The Association of Trading Companies and Manufacturers of Household and Computer Equipment (RATEK) confirms an estimate of laptop sales growth at 29-30%. According to the representative of RATEK Anton Guskov, the main factor in the growth of demand is the replacement of old devices with new ones.[2]

In Russia, the share of laptops under the brand of domestic retailers has tripled over the year

In the first half of 2024, laptops of its own retail brands in Russia accounted for approximately 7% of the total sales of such devices in unit terms. For comparison, a year earlier this figure was about 2.5%. Thus, the demand for these products rose almost three times on an annualized basis. The corresponding figures at the end of June 2024 were announced by the Fplus holding.

According to estimates, in 2023, sales of domestic laptops reached 256 thousand units, which is twice as much as in the previous year. In monetary terms, the volume of sales tripled, amounting to 8.4 billion rubles. According to Forbes, the observed trend is associated with the formed geopolitical situation. Laptops under the brands of domestic retailers replace the products of foreign brands that have curtailed their activities in Russia. First of all, this applies to mid-range laptops. Sales of laptops of Russian brands in January-May 2024 amounted to about 130 thousand units, while for the same period of 2023 64.3 thousand laptops of Russian brands were sold. In monetary terms, the share of such devices rose from 2% to 5%.

Dexp Aquilon Laptop

According to Artur Makhlayuk, a business analyst at Fplus Holding, portable computers in the price range of up to 50 thousand rubles are most in demand. Among the significant market players are the Dex of the retailer DNS, Lunnen Yandex, OSiO of the Russian vendor ICL and Digma of the distributor Merlion. In addition, Sber is developing this area, but as of mid-2024, the bank uses such devices for internal needs - as corporate laptops.

It is noted that for companies the development of their own brands is more profitable in terms of costs. In particular, there is no need to pay for promotion and bear marketing costs. Thanks to these savings, the price for end consumers can be reduced.[3]

Tablet and laptop sales decline two years in a row

Laptop market growth by 11% to 3.4 million units

The volume of the Russian laptop market in 2023 reached 3.4 million units, which is 11% more than a year earlier. This is evidenced by the data of the analytical company ITReseach, published in February 2024.

According to experts, the supply of laptops increased in relation to the "crisis" 2022, but relative to 2021, the market volume decreased by 23%. The largest manufacturers of laptops in terms of the number of devices sold in Russia in 2023 were Huawei, Asus and MSI with a slight difference in total indicators. The leading three accounted for about 38% of the sale of portable PCs in the Russian Federation in 2023.

The volume of the Russian laptop market in 2023 reached 3.4 million units

At the same time, in December 2023, Asus became the leader in the Russian laptop market, pushing Huawei to second place. In third position is Lenovo. Together, the leading three took 34% of the market in the last month of 2023.

It also follows from the ITReseach report that in December 2023, 305 thousand laptops were sold in Russia, which is 24% less than a year ago. As the researchers explain, at the end of 2022, there was a strong import of laptops, especially products of new brands.

File:Aquote1.png
In this (2023), everything happened calmer. Although in general, we are seeing things that became clear at the beginning of this year: the increasing delivery of second-tier brands does not lead to a corresponding increase in sales. Overstocking occurs for no name products. If this is still superimposed by rising prices due to currency fluctuations, then demand as a whole begins to subside. And the Christmas sales in this scheme have not changed anything, the study says.

According to ITReseach estimates, the volume of the Russian laptop market in October-December 2023 amounted to 835 thousand units, which is 16% less than in the same period in 2022.[4]

Topdevice tablet

According to experts interviewed by the publication, more and more domestic brands appear on the Russian electronics market amid the departure of large foreign manufacturers like HP Inc. and Dell, and the volatility of the ruble exchange rate, which led to an increase in the price of devices imported by parallel imports. Therefore, the segment has become attractive for companies that used to be engaged in the production, for example, only household appliances or software development. In particular, the Topdevice website presents several models of TVs, vacuum cleaners and kettles.

Computer mice and game seats were previously produced under the Ardor Gaming brand, said Sergey Vilyanov, an analyst at Fintech Lab accelerator. This is the brand of the Far Eastern retailer DNS. In 2023, a little more than 13 thousand Ardor Gaming laptops were imported into Russia, but the lineup is represented by 16 models in the price range from 66 thousand to 154 thousand rubles, the newspaper writes.

Another example is Depo, which previously produced only servers and storage systems under the Holo brand. Now there is one Depo Holo model on sale online - MC14P4, the price of which starts at 22 thousand rubles in retail.

The Nerpa brand is a subsidiary of the Russian IT integrator OCS. The official website of the company presents three models of devices.

It is almost impossible to estimate the share of new brands of Russian laptops that have appeared on the Russian market, because most brands have imported one or two batches and sell them gradually, says Sergei Vilyanov.[5]

In 2023, 256 thousand domestic laptops were sold in Russia, which is twice as much as a year earlier. In money, the volume of this segment of the laptop computer market tripled and reached 8.4 billion rubles. This is evidenced by the data of the IT holding Fplus published on January 19, 2024.

The representative of M.Video-Eldorado, in a conversation with the publication, confirmed the growing interest in laptops of Russian brands in the third and fourth quarters of 2023. More than 10% of sales in quantitative terms in the network of this retailer fell on laptops from domestic companies. This figure was three times higher than in the same period in 2022, and also twice as much as in the first quarter of 2023.

In "Citylinka," summing up the results of 2023, they told the publication that the iRU brand is the leader in the sales segment. The number of devices sold in the online store has grown more than 6.5 times over the year. In second place is Merlion Digma's own trademark (STM), sales of which increased 1.7 times in unit terms and 2.8 times in monetary terms. Sales of Digma laptops increased by 50% in 2023 and the total sales mark approached 100 thousand units per year. In Ozon of this, Russians were most willing to buy basic models of Russian laptops with an average check of 23,000 rubles.

File:Aquote1.png
The growing demand is primarily due to the lack of available models from eminent manufacturers, in connection with which either devices from Chinese manufacturers, or domestic analogues, or used equipment are now being considered to buy an inexpensive laptop, representatives of the marketplace told the publication.[6]

Laptop sales in Russia increased by 15%. MSI took the lead

In January-November 2023, laptop sales in Russia reached 2.9 million units, an increase of 15% compared to the same period in 2022. Such data analysts "M.Video-Eldorado" led December 21, 2023. We are talking about the entire laptop market, and not just about sales indicators in one retail chain.

Revenue from sales of portable computers at M.Video-Eldorado was estimated at 180 billion rubles in the first 11 months of 2023. This is 10% higher than a year ago. Similar data are provided by other market participants interviewed by Kommersant. According to MTS, in January-October 2023, 2.8 million laptops were sold in Russia for a total of 170 billion rubles. The operator notes that the average price for the year decreased by 4%, to 59 thousand rubles.

According to Fplus, the company became the leader of the Russian laptop market in January-November 2023 MSI with a share of 20.4% in monetary terms and 17.5% in pieces. The share ASUS for the same period was 14.9% in monetary terms and 14.2% in unit terms. Chinese closes the top three Huawei with a share of 13.7% in money and 14.1% in pieces. There is a decrease in the presence in the market, Apple whose share in money for the year decreased from 10 to 6.4%. In piece terms, the American company did not enter the top five manufacturers.

According to Makhlayuk, the leaders changed because many brands left the market and new Chinese vendors took their place, and those companies that remained strengthened their positions. The reason for the strengthening of MSI's position could be a decrease in prices.[7]

Government purchases of Russian laptops and tablets for 10 months reached 14.5 billion rubles

From January to October 2023, inclusive, state departments and state-owned companies of the Russian Federation spent approximately 14.5 billion rubles on purchases of domestic tablets and laptops. The growth in sales of gaming computers and peripherals is also observed on Ozon and Yandex Market.

According to analysts of the online game development school XYZ School, part of the educational company Ultimate Education (Ultimate Education), in January-November 2023, Russians spent about 178 billion rubles on the purchase of gaming peripherals.

M.Video-Eldorado associates the growth of the Russian gaming laptop market with the expansion of the range of goods, the release of new models with current video cards, the arrival of new Chinese players on the market and the development of import operations. Other factors that stimulate sales include seasonal demand, an increase in the number of players, the release of major game releases and greater access to PC games in the face of external restrictions. Gaming laptops have also become popular as a universal solution for work and home tasks. According to M.Video-Eldorado, in January-September 2023, gaming devices accounted for about 20% of laptop sales in the Russian Federation.[8]

Next are Huawei (18.5%) and Asus (18.1%). When considering the market situation in physical terms, the leading three look the same: MSI (18.4%), Huawei (14.3%), Asus (13.1%).

According to CNews, the largest laptop manufacturer in Russia in the first nine months of 2023 was the American HP Inc. with shares of 16.2% in money and 19.6% in pieces.

In July-September 2023 alone, Russians purchased about 900 thousand laptops, which exceeds the results of July-September 2022 by more than 20%, the company notes. According to the retailer, in monetary terms, sales of laptops for the nine months of 2023 were comparable to the results of January-September of the previous year and amounted to approximately 140 billion rubles.[9]

Laptops without OS are more often sold in Russia than with it

In July-August 2023, Russians began to purchase laptops more often without a pre-installed operating system than with an installed software platform. This was announced at the beginning of September 2023 by the operator of fiscal data "Platform OFD."

According to the Vedomosti newspaper, consumers in the Russian Federation most often purchase laptop computers equipped with a display with a diagonal of 14-16 inches. These are devices for solving basic problems, on which it is convenient to install domestic office applications or other inexpensive software for the needs of the user. The average price of a purchased laptop compared to July-August 2022 rose by 15% and amounted to 53,969 rubles. In unit terms, the demand for laptops increased by 21% year-on-year.

Russians began to purchase laptops more often without a pre-installed operating system

The most popular laptop brands on the Russian market were brands from China and Taiwan in the middle price segment, such as Lenovo, Huawei, Asus, Acer and MSI. At the same time, there was a decrease in demand for Apple and HP laptops. The demand for devices of Russian brands jumped by 30% on an annualized basis: in July-August 2023, consumers in the Russian Federation actively purchased budget models Irbis, iRu and Raybook, whose price rarely exceeds 25,000 rubles.

Analysts attribute the increase in sales of laptop computers to the beginning of the new school season. At the same time, the interest of Russians in laptops running Linux has decreased, which is due to the lack of familiar software for work and study on this platform.

The online store Wildberries speaks about the increase in demand for computer equipment in Russia. In July-August 2023, Russians purchased 75% more laptops and desktops on this site than a year earlier. Multifunctional devices showed an increase of 281%, printers - about 101%. The popularity of smartphones increased by 38%.[10]

Russian laptop users are massively switching to pirated Windows

On August 1, 2023, it became known that the demand for laptops without a pre-installed operating system increased significantly in Russia. And this leads to the fact that users are massively switching to pirated Windows.

According to the Izvestia newspaper, citing a report from a partner company of several electronics manufacturers, during January-April 2023, the share of laptops sold without OS reached 20.7%. For comparison: during the first four months of 2021, this figure was 9.1%. In absolute terms, sales of laptops without an installed software platform rose 91% year-on-year, while Windows devices fell 18%. Demand for laptops running macOS and Linux decreased by about a quarter. In the first four months of 2023, a little more than 1 million portable computers were sold in Russia against 1.2 million units in the same period of 2022.

In the Russian Federation, laptop users are massively switching to pirated Windows

There are several reasons why there is an increase in demand for laptops without a pre-installed OS. Usually such devices cost 5-7 thousand rubles cheaper than similar models with Windows. Consumers prefer to save money, and then install Windows on their own, purchasing an illegal key for 500-1000 rubles. In fact, we are talking about installing unlicensed versions of the OS, which provokes an increase in piracy.

Another reason is related to the current geopolitical situation: Microsoft has stopped supporting Russian users, and therefore they cannot download security updates and other updates. At the same time, on many pirated resources, you can buy an access key inexpensively and receive full updates and protection when registering via VPN.

File:Aquote1.png
The growth can be associated with the distrust of buyers towards Microsoft, which has officially left Russia and does not provide service support to customers. Also, some laptop manufacturers take into account possible sanctions risks when shipping Windows devices to the Russian Federation, the activation of which in the country can be tracked by the company, representatives of Ozon said.[11]

Laptop manufacturer Chuwi entered the Russian market

On May 22, 2023, it became known that Chuwi was entering the Russian market. The manufacturer presented laptops, tablet computers and nettops in the Russian Federation. Read more here.

Laptop sales in Russia in the first quarter fell by almost a quarter in pieces

Laptop sales in Russia in the first quarter of 2023 fell in units by almost a quarter, personal computers - by 6% year-on-year. In monetary terms, both segments sank by more than 30%. Market participants linked such a decline to the growth of the share of Russian and Chinese brands, which are cheaper.

Suppliers in Russia have accumulated 1 million laptops

On February 13, 2023, it became known that suppliers in Russia had accumulated more than 1 million unsold laptops. The surplus of computers will lead to lower prices for them.

File:Aquote1.png
Most of all, in the warehouses of suppliers, there is a stock of Taiwanese MSI, American HP, as well as Chinese Xiaomi, Haier and Russian F +, Prestigio, - a source told Kommersant one of the major distributors.
File:Aquote2.png

More than 1 million unsold laptops have accumulated in Russia

If the dollar rate is maintained after the February and March holidays, the price of devices of these brands will fall by 10-15%, the source added.

The surplus of laptops was also confirmed by the leading product manager of diHouse Valery Shershnev. He explained the resulting stocks of devices by the shortage of electronics in early 2022, then distributors began to actively stock up on devices due to increased demand. According to him, in the fourth quarter of 2022, premium brands returned to the market due to parallel imports.

Alexey Dashkevich, head of the procurement group for computers and laptops at Citylink, noted that in 2022, after a long shortage, a large number of deliveries of Chinese brands (Huawei, Chuwi, Itel and others) were received in December. By this time, according to him, the process of parallel imports has already been built, which made it possible to bring goods from vendors who left Russia.

File:Aquote1.png
A significant decrease in cost occurs throughout the category, for example, the configurations of laptops based on Intel Core i3 processors in January 2023 fell by an average of 18% compared to December 2022, - said Dashkevich.
File:Aquote2.png

The representative of the Association of Trading Companies and Commodity Producers of Electric Household and Computer Equipment RATEKAnton Guskov noted that by mid-February 2023, a large stock of smartphones had formed in Russia, but did not specify their brands and volumes.[12]

2022

The share of Russian laptops in the market has doubled

Russian manufacturers accounted for about 9% of unit sales of laptops in the Russian Federation at the end of 2022, while in 2021 this share was measured at 4%, in 2020 - 3%. This is evidenced by data from analysts at GS Group, which were released in mid-March 2023.

According to Izvestia, in 2022, many manufacturers entered the market for the first time. For example, Raybook (part of the ICL group), which entered the top 10 in terms of shipments, overtaking Dell. At the end of 2022, it produced 150 thousand laptops.

In total, Russian manufacturers accounted for 9% of the total laptop sales market

There are several reasons for the growth in the supply of Russian laptops - one of them is that even before the beginning of 2022, companies began to transfer their production to the Russian Federation and, in principle, develop a contract assembly of electronics, said Alexander Surkov, head of the GS Group analytical center. In this situation, this gives advantages in the procurement of equipment in government agencies, in state-owned companies and other areas where the use of foreign electronics is limited, he notes.

File:Aquote1.png
The second reason to assemble Russian laptops in the country, and not resell Chinese ones, is the controllability of the production process, independence in the formation of value formation and the formation of a promotion strategy, in particular, the marketing budget, advertising policy, etc., Surkov said.
File:Aquote2.png

The representative of F-Plus Mobile told the newspaper that the growth in demand for domestic brands was associated with the instability of supplies of the usual A-brands according to the parallel import scheme, the lack of product on the market, on the other hand, Russian manufacturers can offer customers regular deliveries.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade said that the increase in the share of Russian vendors is associated, among other things, with the implementation of investment projects within the framework of departmental support programs. Also, the departure of foreign companies from the market opened up new niches and development prospects for domestic companies, the ministry added.[13]

Leader changed in the Russian laptop market

In 2022 Russia , 3.38 million laptops were imported into, which is 29.6% less than a year earlier. The market leader was the Taiwan MSI that delivered 556 thousand devices. In second and third places were (the Chinese Huawei 428 thousand) and (Lenovo 415 thousand). This is evidenced by the data of the analytical center, GS Group which were released on February 17, 2023.

In 2021, the leader of the Russian laptop market was the American NR Inc., which supplied 1.1 million devices. However, at the end of 2022, it dropped to fourth place, as it reduced the volume of supplies to 377 thousand devices.

Deliveries of MSI laptops began to grow back in the third quarter of 2022, and in the fourth they soared to 326 thousand. For comparison, in recent years they amounted to 7-53 thousand per quarter. Year-on-year, shipments rose 511% in the fourth quarter, analysts said. If in the first 11 months MSI accounted for 11% of the market, then at the end of the year the share increased to 16%. MSI sells laptops for various purposes, from high-performance models for gaming and content creation to office options. According to Kommersant, the vendor not only did not declare his departure from Russia, but also invests in promoting products by ordering advertising materials in popular publications.

Business analyst F+ techMarvell of GC "-" Anton Fomin calls MSI the most affordable laptop brand known to consumers - "its recognition is quite high, especially in the gaming segment." According to him, it is convenient for suppliers to work with the brand, including because "the manufacturer is ready to work with the Russian market."

M.Video-Eldorado told reporters about an increase in the number of sales of laptops of Chinese brands - at the beginning of 2022 they occupied about 30% of the segment, and in the third and fourth their share reached 40-45%. At the same time, gaming laptops in 2022 accounted for just over 15% of total sales. Approximately the same statistics are provided by Citylink, whose representatives estimated the share of gaming laptops sold over the year at 16% of sales throughout the segment.

Merlion told Kommersant that by the end of 2022 there was no growth in demand for gaming laptops, on the contrary, the segment became a little weaker. This is due to the availability of gaming video cards on the market at reasonable prices, the company explained.

According to analysts at M.Video-Eldorado, gaming laptops accounted for just over 15% of total sales in 2022, with the Chinese brand Thunderobot taking first place in the network itself in the third and fourth quarters. The GS Group, in turn, calculated that 2022 thousand Thunderobot laptops were imported into Russia in 36 (14th place in terms of supply).

The growth in demand for laptops is really stimulating Chinese brands, agrees Eldar Murtazin, a leading analyst at Mobile Research Group. After, for example, HP and Dell left the market, brands from the PRC replaced them - by the end of 2022, sales in the Russian Federation were launched by Techno, Realme, Xiaomi, he said.

File:Aquote1.png
There are questions about the quality of these gadgets, but there are ideological disagreements - if international brands produce universal devices, then inexpensive products from Chinese brands can mainly be used as a typewriter, a device for watching video and surfing the web. But the needs of about 80% of users do not go beyond this set, the expert believes.
File:Aquote2.png

In the segment of gaming laptops or devices intended for video editing, Chinese products in the total mass are still losing, he added.[14]

Asus, HP, Lenovo laptops return to Russia on parallel imports

In the official Lenovo online store in Russia, the company's laptops began to be sold again. Izvestia was the first to write about this on December 23, 2022. The editors of TAdviser were convinced of the resumption of sales of laptops. Read more here.

Laptop sales in Russia decreased by a third

In January-September 2022, laptop sales in Russia amounted to 2.1 million units, down 32% compared to the same period in 2021. Such data in early November 2022 were published in Marvel Distribution.

As Kommersant writes with reference to the company's business analyst Anton Fomin, the drop in sales in the retail segment (it accounts for 62% of the market) for the nine months of 2022 was much less than in the corporate segment (by 18% and 47%, respectively).

Laptop sales in the Russian Federation for 9 months decreased by a third
File:Aquote1.png
This means that procurement procedures in the corporate segment are complicated, since the request for technical characteristics of devices is often not satisfied with what remains in the drains, he said.

According to Kommersant, in the third quarter of 2022, 544 thousand laptops were sold in the Russian Federation, which is 55% less than a year ago.

MTS The newspaper was told that in the third quarter of 2022, the average check for laptops grew by five percent. This trend is associated with a change in preferences - buyers more often choose powerful gaming laptops, and the share of inexpensive models is decreasing.

Grigory Dubrovsky, partner and head of the group for work with telecommunications, media and technology companies of the DRT, noted that the market could not help but be influenced by the departure of large foreign manufacturers, parallel imports cannot yet satisfy all the needs of sellers, it takes time to build it.

According to Fintech Lab analyst Sergei Vilyanov, for almost the entire 2022, retailers sold stockpiles of laptops and small supplies in parallel imports. But at the end of 2022, "large consignments of laptops of domestic brands" will begin to appear and supplies of foreign ones will expand, he said. Thanks to the massive departure of Western companies to the secondary market, a huge flow of laptops resulted, partially absorbing demand, added Sergey Vilyanov.[15]

Sharp drop in demand for HP, Dell and Apple laptops

In August 2022, more than 15,000 Dell laptops were sold in Russia, which is 90% less than in January 2022. Sales of HP Inc. and Apple devices have tripled in the same time and fourfold, respectively. This is evidenced by the data of the Russian distributor Marvel Distribution, released at the end of October 2022.

The total number of laptops sold in the country was 1.9 million units.

According to experts, HP remains the leader in sales on the Russian market, which has a share of 21 percent. This is followed by Lenovo - 18%, Acer - 13%, Asus - 12%, Apple - 8%. Data on the reduction in sales of computers of previously demanded American brands were confirmed by M.Video-Eldorado and Citylink.

According to experts, the fact that many brands that left Russia are still in the top of sales is not surprising: stocks that were on the domestic market and parallel imports affect. For example, in January there was a "very large" delivery of HP and Lenovo laptops, a Marvel distribution spokesman said[16]

2020

The Russian laptop market has grown by 75% over 5 years

In 2016, 3,146,039 laptops were sold in Russia, and in 2020 - 3,773,742 devices. If in pieces sales of laptop computers increased by 20%, then in money - by more than 75% (from 97.06 billion to 170.1 billion rubles, respectively). This is evidenced by GfK data released on December 20, 2021.

The tangible rise in demand for laptops in Russia is primarily associated with the consequences of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, namely, with the massive transition of people to a remote or hybrid mode of operation. In addition, in 2016-2020. manufacturers regularly updated their assortments, as a result of which, by the end of this period, laptops as a whole became more convenient, lighter, thinner and more autonomous. The price/performance ratio was also constantly improving.

According to analysts, growing efficiency requirements - from productivity to educational and creative capabilities - naturally lead to the need to use powerful modern PCs. This is a time requirement that shifts demand towards high-performance solutions, raises the average check and leads to higher margins.

According to the study, the sale of laptops on AMD processors on the Russian market in 2020 reached 1,672,383 units, an increase of 2.8 times compared to 2016. In monetary terms, the volume of this segment rose even more - 4.2 times, to 63.28 billion rubles.

Thus, the demand for equipment with AMD platforms grew faster than the entire Russian laptop market. Explaining this trend, the researchers noticed that in 2016-2020. AMD created new lines of processors that first sharply reduced the vendor's residual technological lag from Intel, and subsequently provided him with technological leadership. The market reacted positively to this, both vendors who began to more actively offer AMD-based laptops and consumers who began to actively sell such laptops.

In 2020, there was an active spread of laptops on AMD chips, which largely determined the company's market success. For a long time, solutions on Intel led in the segment of commercial laptops, the reason for which was largely the inertia of the market. Of course, systems on Intel and AMD were compatible with enterprise applications before, and computing power made it possible to effectively solve business problems. The availability of a margin of performance in both options was sufficient to protect investments in the mobile fleet. But corporate users do not like changes, and therefore season after season they formed a demand for specialized laptops built on the Intel platform, experts explain.

At one time, there were practically no commercial systems on AMD, because the demand for them was extremely small, and the demand was small because there were no systems. However, about 4-5 years ago, the situation began to change, key vendors began to bring AMD laptops to the segment and do it more and more actively.

By 2016, machines on AMD were, for the most part, "workhorses" focused on the small and medium-sized business segment. The proliferation of such systems was an important stage - it led to their penetration into the corporate segment, which, ultimately, contributed to the rupture of the "vicious circle." In the second half of the period under consideration, the situation changed qualitatively, and vendors began to create more and more diverse models on the AMD platform: productive, ultra-mobile, representative-for-manuals, etc.[18]

According to GfK analysts, sales of laptops in Russia in the 10th-11th weeks of 2020 (March 2-15) began to grow under the influence of growing fears and preparation for remote work. At the same time, in the 10th week, the level of sales was lower than last year's indicator (minus 18%), and in the 11th week it was already one and a half times higher (+ 50%).

Another factor that affected sales is a sharp jump in the dollar, due to which Russian buyers are forced to implement plans to purchase large equipment as soon as possible. Most buyers are interested in laptops in the price category above 40 thousand rubles.

A shortage on the part of manufacturers is also imposed on the situation: after the total quarantine, production in China only began to improve and does not work at full capacity.

According to Mark Shingarev, Deputy Director of the Order and Logistics Department of Jet Infosystems, HP and Lenovo models are in greatest demand, other RBC sources indicate a significant increase in demand for ASUS and Dell laptops.[19]
