Hitachi Storage Virtualization Operating System (SVOS) is the operating system for DWH, the software-defined environment of storage.

On April 24, 2014 Hitachi Data Systems announced release of the new software solution for creation of "continuously functioning cloud infrastructure" - Storage Virtualization Operating System.


Hitachi Storage Virtualization Operating System (SVOS) is industry-first functionally complete program implementation of the opportunities of virtualization of systems, best in the class, [1].

The new operating system for DWH is created according to standards and is easily built in an IT environment, covering all complex of the infrastructure solutions HDS. Its use doubles life of a hardware component of storage systems. SVOS represents more wide choice of opportunities, the flexible and simplified infrastructure promoting creation of software-defined DPCs.


SVOS combines flexibility of software-defined architecture with the checked functionality of the software of Hitachi for corporate DWH.

Among basic functions:

  • work optimization flash memory,
  • enhanced capabilities of virtualization of storage systems,
  • the automated distribution of data on storage levels,
  • data migration without work interruption,
  • the built-in support of global active devices - for the first time in the industry provides a possibility of creation of configurations of type "active-active" for several systems and several DPCs without additional hardware-software solutions.

2016: SVOS 7

On October 26, 2016 the Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) corporation announced release of the Hitachi Storage Virtualization Operating System (SVOS) system of version 7.

SVOS 7 is created for support of market demands - using an advanced stack of functions of input-output with support of flash drives and provides:

  • quality management of service (QoS). SVOS 7 helps to achieve predictable performance. The solution gives the chance of process optimization of storage.
  • adaptive reduction of volumes of data storage. Provides reduction of volumes and compression for release of capacity in the ratio 2:1, 5:1 or more. SVOS 7 allows to transfer loading on compression a flash modules of Hitachi (FMD) for more effective reduction of volumes of data storage in comparison with other arrays on the basis of flash drives.
  • movement on storage levels in a cloud for VSP of series F on the basis of flash drives. Allows it is transparent to transfer information to the private or public cloud storage, reducing the spaces occupied by DPC, than provides cutting of costs for data storage.

SVOS 7 is established on all Virtual Storage Platform systems of series G and series F.
