2014: Development of NYMPHA PC

in Federal Nuclear Center Sarov (RFNC-VNIIEF) together with FGUGP "Hydrospecgeology" develop a NYMPHA software package designed to simulate the impact of nuclear and radiation hazardous objects Rosatoma on underground, surface waters and soils.

According to the portal "Russian Atomic Community," RFNC-VNIIEF specialists have been developing this complex since the beginning of the 1990s, but initially it is focused on solving a limited number of problems in the field of modeling the movement of groundwater and underground mass transfer.

In 2014, Rosatom adopted a program for a period of three years, providing for the revision and verification of the NYMPHA code for its more effective use for geomigration and geofiltration modeling tasks.

NYMPHA certification is planned for 2016, after which this software will be recommended by Rosatom for adoption as a standard industry software product. At the same time, the complex is being developed for use on high-performance computers, also developed by RFNC-VNIIEF.

According to representatives of Hydrospecgeology, mainly imported software products are used to simulate processes in the bowels as part of ensuring the environmental safety of Rosatom. There are several reasons for import substitution in the organization. Firstly, although import programs have open codes, making changes to them is a whole procedure. Also, imported software and hardware complexes are not suitable for their use for processing confidential information.

Another reason for creating your own software in Hydrospecgeology is the need to work specifically on high-performance computing systems, while imported software products are focused on PCs, from where there are issues of limiting the volume of models (model grid parameters).

"Now, in fact, we use about a million cells, and the tasks that we face dictate the need to use tens of millions of cells. This kind of task was not even set 20 years ago. And now we are facing such a need, and not a single commercial import code allows us to do this, "the Russian Atomic Community quotes a representative of Hydrospetsgeology.

Hydrospecgeology believes that in the future the NYMPHA software complex can be used not only in Rosatom, but also in other structures, for example, in the Ministry of Natural Resources to assess the reserves of drinking, mineral and industrial groundwater.
