2024: Home Robot Vacuum Cleaner Prototype Introduction

Students at MISIS University presented a prototype of an improved home robot vacuum cleaner, which, unlike existing user models, copes more efficiently with work in hard-to-reach places. To do this, the device has a built-in suction mechanism along the entire width of the case and the function of automatic replacement of wet cleaning wipes. The university announced this on September 13, 2024.

Home automated assistants began to gain popularity starting in 1997, when the first prototype robot vacuum cleaner was shown. As of September 2024, a large number of devices performing dry, wet and combined cleaning are on the market.

According to data for 2023, about 1.6 million imported cleaning robots enter the Russian market annually. Therefore, the creation of Russian technology is especially important. In addition, we solved the main problem of existing vacuum cleaners by integrating a suction mechanism along the entire width of the case, and not just in the center, so that cleaning in hard-to-reach places is better, "said Sergey Trushin, chief developer of the robot vacuum cleaner, a graduate of MISIS University.

Cleaning of the robot, created in the Student Design Bureau of NITU MISIS, is close in quality to manual, especially in the corners of the room and along the walls, where ordinary robots leave dust at a distance of 2-3 centimeters due to the fact that the suction gaps are in the middle of the case. The developers solved this problem by moving them to the edges of the vacuum cleaner, as well as ensuring an even speed of intake air over the entire section.

Another feature students have implemented is replacing wet cleaning wipes without user input. To do this, a screw mechanism and fastening plates were printed on a 3D printer.

At MISIS University, special attention is paid to the formation of an entrepreneurial climate, the development of skills and competencies among students that allow opening their own startup, and creating high-tech developments. The Student Design Bureau is actively working at the university, the key task of which is to involve students in research and design activities. Curator of SKB - Head of the Department of Engineering of Technological Equipment of NUST MISIS Alexey Karfidov. Students of various specialties are engaged in SKB, which are united by interest in engineering, the desire to solve complex problems in such urgent areas as robotics, industrial design, etc., - commented the rector of NUST MISIS Alevtina Chernikova.

The main task of the engineer is to create products that will be not only effective, but also available to a wide range of users. Students of NITU MISIS were able to put their knowledge into practice, solving the problems faced by consumers. Our graduates are innovators and we will continue to support them along the way, providing opportunities for development and self-realization. In the future, it is planned to improve mechanisms for long stable work, - said Alexey Karfidov, head of the department of engineering of technological equipment.
