2020: Hackers start hacking robot vacuum cleaners to wiretap users

In early December 2020, it became known that a research group of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Maryland and the University of Singapore, led by Nirupam Roy, found out that the laser navigation system used in robotic vacuum cleaners can be hacked and used as a wiretap.

A problematic element of many robotic vacuum cleaners is the navigation system. It is based on a laser beam, the reflection of which allows the device to avoid colliding with objects that are around it. The navigation system of the robot vacuum cleaner releases a laser beam, which is reflected from the surface of walls, furniture and objects, and then returns back and forms a three-dimensional model of the room. At the same time, the system is able to "collect" the sounds and speech of people who are indoors. Subsequently, this data can be decrypted and literally listened to. Data from scanners of many robotic vacuum cleaners is stored in the cloud space of their manufacturer, so hackers can hack them, steal data and eventually process them with a decryptor to listen to sounds and speech.

Hackers began to hack robot vacuum cleaners and exploit the vulnerability of the navigation system to wiretap owners

Using these features, lidars the researchers passed the signals through their computer learning algorithms, which can distinguish human voices from music. The group's computer program, called LidarPhone, was able to recognize speech and sounds with 90% accuracy.

Researchers believe this vulnerability of robot vacuum cleaners poses a potential safety risk in users' homes or in the businesses where they are used.
