2020: Commercial start in California

At the end of 2020 in California permitted commercial driving of completely unmanned vehicles on public roads. One of the first the startup of Nuro which started self-governed machines for delivery of orders seized this opportunity.

The compact Nuro R2 electric car transports loads in two separate compartments and does not take place for passengers. It is equipped with sensors, cameras, a lidar and the radar to guarantee safe movement to the destination. The car is equipped with doors like "wing of a seagull" and is capable to gather maximum speed in 40 km/h.

The clients who placed the order for R2 will be able to trace the vehicle through the application while it goes to their house. On arrival on phone of the client there will be notification with the offer to go outside to take away the order. For this purpose it is necessary just to enter code number on the touch screen R2 to unblock the corresponding compartment.

The license for commercial use of pilotless cars granted by Nuro in California provides a number of restrictions: for example, the speed of cars will be limited to about 56 km/h, and they can be used only in favorable weather conditions.

Besides, authorities of the state obliged owners of parks of pilotless cars to provide the detailed description of approaches to  security  including  to epidemiological security  during COVID-19 pandemic, to provide  at least on  a part of machines a possibility of transportation  of physically disabled people and  wheelchairs  and also quarterly to provide the depersonalized data on  trips.

According to the expert in transport professor David Bailey from the University of Birmingham, safety of use of autonomous cars remains problematic. Considering the above-mentioned restrictions imposed on R2 he recognizes that start of such delivery will become one more important step to the pilotless future.

In  November, 2020 Nuro attracted  about $500 million investments how investors willingly invest in  push technologies of goods  in the conditions of COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.[1]
