Cloud without server virtualization
In June 2017, Oracle announced the expansion of the European data center cluster Oracle Cloud EU Region. This will provide customers in the region with a full range of cloud services, including SaaS and new PaaS and IaaS capabilities to support their transition to the cloud.
Among the new IaaS services are Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services, in fact, a cloud without server virtualization, and literally "bare hardware." Now they will be able to use European customers, including Russian ones. By ordering Bare Metal, a physical server in the Oracle cloud, you can create applications with high performance, and the "approach" of the data center to the client minimizes network latency.
For the first time, a public cloud offers bare hardware without any software - computing power is available without the overhead of a hypervisor. Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services is the architecture of the classic Compute service that allows customers to get computing resources in the cloud. It combines the advantages of two well-known models - General Compute (dynamism and simplicity inherent in clouds built on the virtualization platform) and Dedicated Compute (performance and isolation inherent in clouds of the "rental equipment" family).
The developers have tried to overcome such a drawback of the traditional IaaS service as a decrease in performance in a virtual environment, which is why some customers often prefer to place their equipment in the supplier's data center or rent a dedicated physical server. However, unlike Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services, this option does not allow you to flexibly manage the amount of consumed resources, as in the cloud model. In addition, Bare Metal is a number of additional features.
Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services offers integrated block and object storage network services, identity and access management, VPN connectivity, and software-configurable virtual cloud network (VCN). VCN allows customers to work with Bare Metal cloud services as a secure, elastic extension of their local area network. Services can be provided on demand, they are available from the console or through the API, with payment for use.
Fully isolated Bare Metal Instance instances, a highly secure network, and complete separation of virtual and physical networks is a security guarantee.
Server NVMe drives, iSCSI drives, and external Object Storage network storage are used to store data, and can store any file or quantity. High-density servers and NVMe storage all yield up to four million IOPS per Bare Metal Instance. In addition, there is archive storage - economically more attractive, but without online access, as well as backup storage with customizable copy procedures.
Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services actually emulate the local data center with its high and predictable performance. They are ideal for the most demanding applications. Bare Metal is therefore the most valuable for workloads such as real-time transaction processing and analytics systems, 3D rendering, and video encoding. For example, artificial intelligence company Falkonry was able to double the number of imitations, and uStudio, a developer of enterprise video solutions, has accelerated the processes of transcoding high-definition video nine times.
These services can be used in a wide variety of business models and use cases - for tasks with different requirements for speed, reliability and management. They will be of interest to a wide range of users: from small companies, educational institutions and even students who have the rare opportunity to work with high-performance server equipment, to large corporate customers. Moreover, the application areas are expanded due to additional functions, including load balancing, database service, etc. Full workload flexibility and portability provides capabilities including running the OS, hypervisor, or the entire software stack.
Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services can be used as an alternative to buying servers when you need high performance. The advantages of this offer are low price, reduced costs, automation, which means reduced labor and error probability, faster application deployment.
2016: Announcement
On September 23, 2016, Oracle introduced the Bare Metal Cloud Services infrastructure cloud IaaS portfolio, which includes "clean" (without software) cloud servers. According to the company, they are 11.5 times faster and 20% cheaper than the highest performing competing solution.
Oracle Cloud Platform components will help customers get the most out of a multi-brand and dedicated computing environment that includes Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services, Oracle Ravello Cloud Service, Oracle Container Cloud Service, and extensions to existing Oracle Cloud services.
Clean cloud servers in a fully virtualized network environment provide a high-performance database as a service, block network storage, object storage, and virtual private network (VPN). Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services provides a secure and high-performance software-configurable private Virtual Cloud Network (VCN) that allows companies to use Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services as a secure and elastic extension of their corporate network. Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services supports maximum network bandwidth by providing direct connectivity between computing and storage nodes.
As part of the deployed regional Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services solution, there are three fully available domains that will help you place high availability and reliability applications in the cloud. Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services seamlessly interacts with products within Oracle Cloud Platform, which contributes to the placement of business-critical applications that fully use available services in Oracle Cloud, the corporation's press service said.
Oracle Bare Metal Services technology is built with an innovative approach to developing a cloud platform, where customers are given freedom of choice and flexibility when moving to the cloud environment. It includes ultra-dense compute servers that provide high performance for processing corporate workloads, high IOPS (IOPS) and bandwidth.
