Cloud without server virtualization

In June, 2017 Oracle announced expansion of the European cluster of data centers Oracle Cloud EU Region. It will allow to provide to clients in the region a full range of cloud services, including SaaS and new opportunities of PaaS and IaaS for support of their transition to a cloud.

Among new IaaS-services - Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services, in fact, a cloud without server virtualization, and literally - "naked iron". Now the European customers, including Russian will be able to use them. Ordering Bare Metal - the physical server in a cloud of Oracle, it is possible to create applications with a high performance, and "approach" the DPC to the client minimizes delays in network.

For the first time the public cloud offers "naked iron" without any software – computing powers are available without hypervisor overheads. Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services is an architecture of the classical service Compute allowing clients to receive computing resources in a cloud. It combines advantages of two known models – General Compute (dynamism and simplicity inherent in the clouds constructed on the virtualization platform) and Dedicated Compute (performance and isolation inherent in family clouds of "lease of the equipment").

Developers tried to overcome such lack of traditional service IaaS as decline in production in virtual environment because of what some customers quite often prefer to place the equipment in DPC of the supplier or to rent the selected physical server. However, unlike Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services, such option does not allow to manage flexibly the volume of the consumed resources, as in cloud model. Besides Bare Metal are a number of additional opportunities.

Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services offers the integrated network services of block and object data storage, management of identification and access, connection to VPN and the program configured virtual cloud network (Virtual Cloud Network, VCN). VCN allows clients to work about cloud as Bare Metal services as with safe, elastic expansion of the local network. Services can be provided on demand, they are available from the console or through API, with payment for use.

Completely isolated copies of Bare Metal Instance, network with high degree of protection and complete separation of virtual and physical networks are security accreditation.

For data storage NVMe-drives of servers, the disks iSCSI and external network storages Object Storage are used: on them it is possible to store any files and in any quantity. Servers of high density and NVMe storage – all this gives to four million IOPS on one copy of Bare Metal Instance. Besides, there is an archive storage – economically more attractive, but without online access and also reserve storage with the configured regulations of copying.

Cloud services of Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services actually emulate local DPC with its high and predicted performance. They are ideal for the most resource-intensive applications. Therefore Bare Metal is of the greatest value for such loadings as transaction processing systems and analysts in real time, 3D - rendering and coding of video. For example, the Falkonry company borrowing with artificial intelligence could double the number of simulation, and uStudio, the developer of corporate video solutions, by nine times accelerated processes of recoding of video of high definition.

These services can be involved in the most different business models and scenarios of use – for tasks with different requirements to the speed of work, reliability and management. They will be interesting to a wide range of users: from the small companies, educational institutions and even students for whom the rare opportunity for work with the high-performance server hardware, to big corporate customers opens. And scopes extend also due to additional functions, including balancing of loading, service of the database, etc. The complete flexibility and portability of workload gives opportunities, including start of OS, a hypervisor or all program stack.

On September 23, 2016 the Oracle corporation provided a portfolio of the infrastructure cloud IaaS-solutions Bare Metal Cloud Services as a part of which "net" (without software) cloud servers. According to the statement of the company, they are 11.5 times faster and 20% cheaper than the most high-performance competing solution.

Components Oracle Cloud Platform will help customers to use with maximum efficiency the multirent and selected computing environment as a part of which the solution Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services Oracle Ravello Cloud Service, Oracle Container Cloud Service and expansion to the operating services Oracle Cloud.

"Net" cloud servers in completely virtualized network environment provide the high-performance database as service, block network data storage, storage of objects and a virtual private network (VPN). Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services provide the protected and high-performance program configured private network Virtual Cloud Network (VCN) which allows the companies to use Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services as the protected and elastic expansion of the corporate network.
