2017: Upgrade of Ravello Cloud Service
On March 23, 2017 the corporation Oracle provided a cloud service of Ravello Cloud Service, with its help it is possible to transfer virtual machines VMware either KVM from DPC in Oracle Public Cloud, AWS or Google Cloud without changes in the virtual machine, network settings or the organization of data storage.
Transfer in a web application cloud — databases with the balancer of loading — will demand several steps:
- migration of virtual machines means of Oracle Ravello Import Tool (Ravello on the basis of metadata will create virtual machines and will automatically determine application topology),
- check of a configuration in the graphical interface
- making changes if there is a need[1].
It is necessary "publish" the annex in a cloud. According to the statement of the company, all process will take several minutes: the difficult technical task is quickly carried out by means of Oracle Ravello.
After migration in Oracle Ravello environment, the ESXi server it is not required any more. Also the license is not necessary. Thus, it is possible to clone local environments in a cloud, without purchasing for these copies of additional licenses of VMware of ESXi and vSphere.
According to representatives of the company, Oracle Ravello Cloud Service "the cloud hypervisor" — Ravello HVX uses the. HVX uses so-called technology of binary translation and does not involve specific hardware technologies (like Intel of VT and AMD SVM). The hypervisor of Oracle Ravello is designed for work in a cloud. In its structure three components:
- high-performance engine of virtualization (nested hypervisor),
- сеть SDN (software-defined network)
- subsystem of storage (storage overlay).
Over it the level of management works. There is API for management and monitoring.
The SDN component implements L2 network communications between virtual machines. In the virtual area network the user can create subnets, VLAN routers, also such additional services are available, DHCP as well as DNS firewalls VPN.
The third component is responsible for data storage. Ravello Storage Overlay abstracts object storage and different types of devices with block access. For VM all subsystem of storage — from type of the peripheral control unit and the device to the bus PCI — remains to the same, it allows the virtual machine to function the same as in corporate DPC.
Use of Oracle Ravello Cloud Service does not require profound technical knowledge, the developer company stated. Virtual machines move to a cloud simple "drag and drop", between them communications are created. Using the metadescription of VMware of ESXi, the cloud service of Oracle Ravello recreates control functions by the virtual machine and network topology that allows to select necessary resources, to appropriate to network adapters of virtual machines the public or private IP addresses.
It is possible to create so-called Blueprint — the application template allowing to unroll a large number of copies of the application, to clone it. The IP addresses at such copies do not repeat — they change manually or automatically. Ravello allows to create difficult virtual environments with unlimited number of virtual machines, using Blueprint it is possible to create the "self-serviced" library of applications from them.
Applications launch is possible on the set schedule. For example, the virtual machine usually is required to the tester in working hours, in the rest of the time it can be switched off. Start of virtual machines in a certain order is possible: at first database servers, then Web servers, etc. Besides, REST API is supported — conveniently to use it for automation and programming access to the virtual machine.
The virtual machines transferred to Oracle Ravello environment can be optimized at cost or on performance. In the latter case not only the number of virtual processors, memories, etc., but also the region of the publication of environments — for the maximum speed of access is selected.
2016: Ravello Cloud Service
Ravello Cloud Service is a cloud service for transfer of workloads in a public cloud.
On September 23, 2016 the Oracle corporation provided the Oracle Cloud Platform components among which there is a Ravello Cloud Service.
Service helps the organizations to transfer corporate workloads of VMware and KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) to a public cloud without entering of any changes into a configuration.
Using Oracle Ravello Cloud Service, customers can start VMware in a public cloud without conversion of virtual machines, a reconfiguration of applications or network changes.
