Oracle Database as a Service is the new offer of corporation created as addition to the operating cloud services. On October 21, 2013 Oracle announced an exit of a new cloud service as a part of Oracle Cloud Platform Services.
Description
The new solution of Oracle Database as a Service provides full control over the selected copy of DBMS, supports any Oracle applications of Database and offers users ample opportunities of the choice from all complex of the accompanying services.
The Oracle Database as a Service helps clients and partners to develop and develop business applications, providing for this purpose: the selected copy(copies) of DBMS which works in virtual environment of Oracle VM and it are provided to the customer:
- earlier tested configurations;
- support of any DBMS application and any method of connection to DBMS;
- flexible administration control over DBMS.
Options of service
The corporation offers three options of access to service of the database as services: basic, controlled and completely controlled. All power of Oracle databases in "cloud" for applications of any type is provided. There is a possibility of use of all standard network connections of network and full control.
Services of service are available on the basis of a monthly subscription fee which can differ from $175 to $2 thousand.
Available versions of databases
The service offers the selected copies of databases: Oracle Database 12c Oracle Database 11g with the options Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition or Standard Edition One.
Clouds database
The Oracle Database 12c Enterprise Edition option includes multiple lease - it is a new option for management of the connected databases in "cloud".
Full access
Full administrative access by means of SSH, SQL Developer, Datapump, SQL * Plus and other tools is provided.
Standard network connection with a DB
Any type of connection to a DB, including SQL * by Net, JDBC, and other drivers, for receiving access to the selected database copies is used.
Tools
Enterprise Manager, SQL Developer, utilities of Oracle or third-party developers is applied.
Options of management
The full range of solutions of database management of Oracle - standard operatsiyaiya of the database, backup, change of the code, cloning and updating is available.
Full access
All service levels provide access to root roles (unlimited) and DBA.
Security
VPN Compute services, safety rules and lists are used.
Service levels
The basic level of service - management of a DB is implemented by customers, controlled and completely controlled provides Oracle, with the assistance of the customer.
Flexibility of use of resources
Adding or removal of computing resources, memory or storage systems - as required.
Management of lifecycle
Flexible management by databases for production or control cloning, simple management of storage of data on copies of virtual machines
2016: The founder of Oracle Larry Ellison picked Amazon DBMS to pieces
At the Oracle OpenWorld 2016 conference (San Francisco, on September 18-22) the co-founder and the chairman of the board of directors of Oracle Larry Ellison told about advantages of cloud DBMS of the company over the competing solutions Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Ellison said that databases of Amazon lag behind the latest version of Oracle Database in a cloud approximately for 20 years. In particular, he pointed to 105-fold superiority of Oracle Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) over Amazon DBaaS regarding the speed of the solution of analytical tasks. The difference in tasks of OLTP and the mixed loadings exceeds 35 and 1000 times respectively.
As Larry Ellison noted, the cloud of Oracle Cloud is optimized for Oracle Database, unlike AWS. Oracle Database works in a cloud of Oracle Cloud up to 24 times faster, than Oracle Database in the environment of AWS, the cofounder of Oracle specified.
New technologies of Oracle open to cloud databases and cloud infrastructure The Path to the Future — Ellison says. — Amazon for decades lags behind in any relevant area of databases, and their system even more closed, than mainframes. |
In the Larry Ellison report it was also said that AWS has limited performance at data storage: in Amazon Elastic Block Storage restriction in 48,000 IOPS affects a node that by eight times concedes to Oracle Cloud indicators; restriction of Amazon Elastic Block Storage in 800 MB/sec. on a node means by 19 times lower speed on comparisons with Oracle Cloud.
Speaking about shortcomings of AWS, Ellison also paid attention to lack of horizontal scaling of Oracle on nodes and compatibility with the existing corporate applications of databases, including Oracle, DB2, SQL Server or Teradata. Amazon Aurora, Amazon Redshift and Amazon DynamoDB work only in AWS.
2015: Oracle and Mirantis included Database as a Service in private clouds on the basis of OpenStack
On June 9, 2015 the Oracle corporation announced the agreement with Mirantis on the basis of which the companies include the solution Database as a Service with Oracle Multitenant technology in private clouds on the OpenStack platform.
Users Oracle Solaris Mirantis OpenStack will also have an opportunity to accelerate deployment of applications and databases in private cloud environments on the basis of the project Murano OpenStack. As a result of cooperation of two companies, technologies Oracle Database 12c and Oracle Multitenant on the platform Oracle Solaris will become the first cloud products Oracle available in the directory Murano.
Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Solaris combines the developed security protections, reliability of a corporate class and simplicity of administration of the Oracle Solaris operating system with dynamism of OpenStack, creating an optimal, complete cloud platform for accomplishment of corporate applications and work of Oracle Database.
The option Oracle Multitenant provided to Oracle Database 12c helps to support a set of the connected databases in one multirent (container) database. Each connected database offers the protected, isolated environment for operation of applications. The consolidated container databases form a unified environment for support by the supplier of cloud solutions, providing significant savings of server space. It helps users and developers of cloud solutions:
- it is safe to unroll the connected databases on Oracle Solaris from OpenStack;
- provide secure access of annexes to the new and existing connected databases to OpenStack;
- allow applications of OpenStack to take all advantage of the highest security level, performance and efficiency of the Software in Silicon technology ("software on a crystal") which is built in the new systems of Oracle on the basis of SPARC M7 processors for Oracle Database 12c running Oracle Solaris.
According to developers, databases Oracle are crucial for many enterprises, and integration Oracle Database 12c, Oracle Solaris and Mirantis OpenStack in the preparing release Mirantis OpenStack 6.1 will help customers to unroll applications quickly Oracle database.
The release of the solution is planned for the second quarter 2015.
