SAP: Terata sued us because the company lost the competition

At the end of August 2018, SAP filed a petition in the District Court of Northern California (USA) with a request to dismiss the lawsuit, which Terata filed against the German company in June.

The complaint stated that SAP created a joint venture with Terata to gain access to the partner's intellectual property and then create a competing product, which was then used to attract customers. In addition, according to the plaintiff, SAP tried to squeeze Terata out of the market, tying customers to its technology by the fact that ERP the complex S/4HANA can only work on the platform. HANA

SAP filed a motion in the Northern California (US) District Court seeking to dismiss the lawsuit that Terata filed against the German company

The SAP called these allegations "essentially groundless," and the lawsuit, according to the company, became a gesture of despair, as Terata lost competition in the market.

Terata failed to compete effectively with S/4HANA because the company focused only on its flagship analytical database and did not offer innovative, suitable and competitive products... In fact, Terata complained that SAP decided to offer this integrated system with HANA instead of linking it to the Terata database. Antitrust legislation is still created to prevent harm to competition, and it will harm competitors, "the SAP statement sent to the court said.

The company noted that the joint venture was launched because "the Terata customer base was limited," and the company wanted to access SAP users. However, the project was extremely unsuccessful - it was possible to attract only one client.

In addition, according to SAP, the company does not specify which trade secrets were stolen from them, and what terms of the contract were violated.[1]

Terata sued SAP for stealing trade secrets for HANA

In June 2018, Terata sued SAP, accusing the German company of stealing commercial secrets, which were then used in the SAP HANA analytical platform. More details here.

Purchase of Appoxee - Mobile Marketing Software Provider

On January 29, 2015, Terata, a developer of analytics systems and marketing applications for big data, announced the purchase of Appoxee, a mobile marketing software provider running on the SaaS model. More details here.

Start Presto Support Program

On July 7, 2015, Terata announced the launch of a multi-year open source development program for Presto and its commercial support.

Terata has adopted a three-stage project implementation plan and is going to invest in an open source project under the Apache license, in which it will improve the characteristics of the Presto code base, scalability, iterative queries and the ability to send requests simultaneously to several data repositories.

It is expected that Terata's contribution to the development of Presto will help companies facilitate the process of extracting valuable analytical findings from "data lakes" and help extend this effect to the entire analytics ecosystem.

Presto complements the Terata QueryGrid software solution and fits into the ideology of Terata Unified Data Architecture. Presto allows users to initiate queries directly from Hadoop, while Terata QueryGrid allows you to initiate queries from Terata Database and Terata Aster Database using the regular SQL protocol.

Presto runs on several Hadoop distributions. In addition, Presto can directly from the Hadoop platform send requests to Cassandra, relational databases or private data stores. This cross-platform analytic feature allows Presto users to maximize business value from "data lakes" of any size calculated by giga- or petabytes.

Terata's three-stage 100% open source investment project will expand Presto's corporate functionality.

  • Phase 1 - Improve basic functions that simplify the introduction of Presto, including installation, study of supporting documentation, basic monitoring. Stage 1 features are available for download on Teradata.com/Presto or Github.
  • Phase 2 - integrate Presto with other key components of the big data ecosystem, such as the standard Hadoop distribution of management tools, interoperability with YARN, as well as connectors that extend the reach of Presto functionality outside the Hadoop distributed file system (HDFS). These capabilities will be available at the end of 2015.
  • Phase 3 - Launch the ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) architecture and the JDBC (Java Database Connectivity, API API Collaboration Java and Databases) interface to enhance the customization capabilities Presto of organizations and enhance integration with business intelligence tools. Improved security through distributed role model access. These extensions will be available in 2016.

On July 17, 2014, Terata acquired Hadapt assets, including experienced big data specialists and intellectual property.

"We welcome Revelytix and Hadapt employees to Terata and hope their contributions will help Terata Labs develop big data solutions for our customers faster," said Scott Gnau, President of Terata Labs. - Adding key assets to these companies underscores Terata's commitment to continuous innovation and consumer value creation, extends our range of big data solutions, and enhances the characteristics of Terata Unified Data Architecture. "

According to the company, data management and understanding of metadata at Hadoop is one of the most important problems and obstacles to the successful development of Hadoop today. The acquisition of Revelytix will give Terata new tools for managing and preparing data in Hadoop, as it provides a single solution that integrates metadata, lifecycle procedures, and comprehensive data processing. Revelytix staff moving to Terata have extensive expertise in creating metadata management solutions. With the acquisition of Hadapt, Terata has an experienced team of engineers with extensive knowledge of big data that will be used to improve the Terata Unified Data Architecture.

From an organizational point of view, the employees and intellectual property acquired as a result of these transactions will become part of Terata Labs, the research division of Terata, leading in its field.

2013: Training plan in Russia for 1000 specialists in the company's technologies

The number of specialists with knowledge of Terata technologies reached 500-600 people in Russia, the company's CEO in Russia Andrei Alekseenko announced to TAdviser in early December 2013. These include specialists who were specially trained, either received knowledge through participation in projects, or independently, he explains. More than 200 of these specialists are certified.

Alekseenko notes that this indicator can already be called a sufficient "critical mass" so that the customer is not tied to the vendor when implementing projects based on Terata technologies: customers can now themselves, up to searching through the HeadHunter, use or hire one of the already certified specialists and partners.

According to the CEO of Terata in Russia, the company wants to increase the current figure of 500 specialists by three times - up to 1.5 thousand. Terata estimates that this is the mass of specialists needed to allow the company and partners to "work properly" with the entire big data analytics market.

Andrey Alekseenko notes that Terata is conducting systematic work to achieve this goal, constantly training partners and customers. Now the company is also discussing the idea of opening an independent training center in Russia that offers public courses in Terata technologies, he says.

In addition, the company works with students of technical universities, for example, MIPT, where it lectures on data storage technology. Since last year, several students have been working in the Russian representative office of Terata, having previously completed practice.

"I don't think it will be a very serious personnel source for us personally. Rather, this is a way to convey knowledge "to the masses" in order to create a critical mass of Terata technology specialists in the market, "says Andrei Alekseenko
.

He also notes that the staff of Terata itself in Russia is not planned to expand significantly in the near future. As of the end of 2013, according to Alekseenko, its number is about 140 people.
