User gets severe burn from smartwatches
In mid-September 2022, posts of users began to appear on the network, on the skin of which burns and allergic spots remained after wearing Samsung Galaxy Watch smartwatches. The first to publish a photo of the burn was a user under the nickname The Mattster Of Self, indicating in his post also information about which watch model's body burned his skin on his arm.
A post on Reddit, first seen by Techradar, shows an image of a man's wrist with a rough outline of where the watch was, as well as a circular burn where the back cover of the watch remained close to the skin. A user under the nickname TheMattsterofSelf reported that the watch was a Galaxy Watch Active2, and judging by the back cover of the watch, it is a Bluetooth model. Judging by the image alone, discoloration and small blisters on the skin indicate minor second-degree burns.
The 2019 watch features a wireless charging back cover that uses an induction coil rather than copper connections that have caused skin irritation and rashes in some users. Otherwise, the watch is equipped with a regular set of fitness sensors to control heartbeat and measure stress, and the user guide recommends using Goodnight mode, which turns off signals and notifications for the duration of sleep. There is no mention of skin irritation issues on Samsung's health and safety page.
Gizmodo was unable to independently verify the overheating claims, but the user reported on the r/WellThatSucks subreddit that he did not interfere with the device's settings other than disconnecting the telephone and browsing the Internet. A user went to an emergency centre after finding burns under his watch. He claims that he did not use any skin cream and took sleeping pills, so he did not feel burns until late at night.
Apparently, the burns were caused by overheating, as, according to the user, after the burn, the device turned on only for 15 seconds, after which it overheated and turned off. Samsung has already had to make fixes to the Active 2 clock regarding heartbeat tracking, but has not publicly acknowledged overheating issues.
In the operating conditions of the device, the temperature of the device is mentioned, it is warned that some applications and long-term use can cause an increase in temperature, and that it is necessary to make sure that the device supports ventilation and air flow. However, judging by the user's comments, it seems that the problem was related to the device itself.
In the past, there have been reports from members of the Samsung community complaining that the Galaxy series watch, in particular the Active watch, leads to skin irritation and burns. However, the latter message seems to be one of the most serious cases, especially when you consider that due to taking drugs, the user could not wake up in time and remove the overheated device.[1]
