VCE VxRail is the hyper convergent infrastructure solution (HCIA) for an environment of VMware.

2020: VxRail E based on AMD Epyc and the protected VxRail D

On June 25, 2020 the company Dell Technologies announced two VxRail systems, including the VxRail model steady against adverse effects of the external environment, and page model processors AMD EPYC. It provides the computing power and availability of solutions HCI which can be unrolled in difficult conditions in remote locations with limited space.

According to the producer, the compact VxRail system with protection against an adverse effect of the external environment is capable to maintain severe conditions of operation. The protected VxRail D series integrates availability and abilities to manage lifecycle of VxRail in the compact and long-lasting form factor intended for work in severe conditions far off. The system equipped with the Intel Xeon processors Scalable of the 2nd generation only 20 inches in depth is also capable to maintain extreme temperatures, a short-term overload up to 40G, to work at height up to 4.5 thousand m. It provides IT support in those locations where failsafe infrastructure is important, for example, at deployment of a data processing center on remote objects, on board the vessels in the sea or as the equipment of airplanes. The VxRail D series is an optimal solution for production, industrial and oil and gas environments where conditions are created by difficult technical issues, or the areas cost much.

As noted in Dell Technologies, on the VxRail E Series platform EPYC AMD processors of the second generation are available. Solution VxRail series E with EPYC AMD processors offers customers an additional option – with computing cores (up to 64) and support of PCIe 4. Such systems can be unrolled in remote branches or in data processing centers. In combination with the efficient power source these compact solutions in a form factor 1U are an optimal variant for clients who need the good performance and computing power in the one-socket platform for the distributed locations. The VxRail E665 system available in configurations with NVMe, to All-Flash or with hybrid storage, provides in one-socket model good performance and is suitable for databases, work with unstructured data, support of infrastructure of virtual desktops (VDI) and workloads of HPC.

Being the system HCI, VxRail developed together with VMware offers the hybrid cloud approach which distinguishes ease of deployment and management - irrespective of where there are data and applications, emphasized in Dell Technologies.

The Dell Technologies Cloud Platform platform with VMware Cloud Foundation on VxRail supports configurations with only four computing nodes that allows customers to begin with small and to increase a system gradually.

According to the statement of the developer, software of VxRail HCI System Software helps to optimize updates, allows to start checks of working capacity before updating on demand and also to exercise control and orchestration on the basis of cloud computing that gives the chance to support and service each cluster of VxRail for all its lifecycle, irrespective of physical location of this cluster.

Thanks to updating of the VxRail platform allows to run more resource-intensive applications, for example, of the database in RAM, such as SAP HANA, or applications for artificial intelligence / machine learning. According to the developer, VxRail supports:

  • Fixed memory Intel Optane which provides integrity of data and for 90% lower delay. Thanks to this addition VxRail became completely the integrated system HCI based on VMware supporting all range Intel of Optane technologies for a data processing center including the Intel Xeon processors Scalable of the 2nd generation, a fixed memory of Intel Optane and solid state drives Intel Optane SSD.
  • The graphic processors NVIDIA Quadro RTX which in combination with the software of NVIDIA virtual GPU (vGPU) provide possibilities of the accelerated rendering, artificial intelligence, the advanced graphics and calculations in data processing centers for different workflows. With the software of Quadro RTX and NVIDIA vGPU customers can unroll the solutions VxRail which help end users to increase productivity of data processing centers.

For June 23, 2020 are available to buyers around the world:

  • The VxRail D Series systems with the Intel Xeon processors Scalable of the 2nd generation;
  • VxRail E Series systems;
  • VxRail HCI System Software software updating;

VxRail Appliances based on PowerEdge of the 14th generation

The company Dell EMC in January, 2018 announced release of hyper convergent infrastructure solutions (HCI) based on servers Dell EMC PowerEdge the 14th generation. The line of the HCI solutions Dell EMC includes family of the solutions Dell EMC VxRail Appliance which are based on VMware vSAN and developed together with VMware. In more detail here.

The Dell EMC VxRail Appliances complexes based on the PowerEdge servers of the 14th generation can be used in any scenario, including start of crucial tasks in environments of VMware. Customers of VxRail Appliance can calculate on:

  • The increased performance in the most resource-intensive applications: speed of work is increased to 2 times counting on the number of transactions of input-output per second (IOPS), in turn, response time is reduced more than twice;
  • Performance of necessary level: by 9 times more predictable response time in the sub-millisecond range;
  • Broader customization under specific needs thanks to millions of new configurations, including new models of processors, SSD drives with the SATA interface, additional network configurations, support of new GPU, etc.;
  • Support of the program configured NAS thanks to Dell EMC Isilon SD Edge for distribution of files in remote offices and on model "from an external node to a core" in addition to remote replication, the cloud object storage and control functions.

2016

Replenishment of a line of VxRail Appliance

On October 31, 2016 the Dell EMC company announced replenishment of a line of the convergent systems due to integration of the solutions VxRail Appliance for the organization of hyper convergent infrastructure (hyper-converged infrastructure, HCI) with the PowerEdge servers.

Dell EMC supports cooperation with VMware in joint development thanks to what can propose to customers the solution for acceleration of implementation of innovations.

As a part of family of the hyper convergent HCI VxRail Appliance systems for an environment of VMware there are configurations on the basis of the Intel Broadwell platform, VSAN technologies VMware vSphere, VMware and the PowerEdge servers now. It allowed to increase CPU capacity by 40%, to offer big flexibility and scalability and also bigger number of configurations, without raising the price. All-flash nodes have twice high capacity, and the three-nodal initial configuration costs 25% less.

Among target loadings:

  • the loadings which are actively working with resources data storage such as analytics Big Data and Microsoft Exchange. Customers are offered to use advantages of VxRail on the platform PowerEdge R730xd with nodes of data storage of high density and the latest processors Intel to high-performance data processing.
  • loadings with high requirements to graphics for which the high level of performance provided with such operating systems as Microsoft Windows 10 work with the "heavy" and actively using graphics applications is necessary, including CAD, scientific applications and packets of development.
  • environment of remote offices and branches receive a new three-nodal configuration of initial level which price begins with the amount which is not exceeding 45 thousand dollars. It gives to customers the chance of cost-efficient deployment of hyper convergent infrastructure with the simplified management of IT on several remote platforms.

Customers who need to receive quicker return from the solution of virtualization of the client systems of a corporate class Dell EMC offers the VxRail Appliance configurations complete with VMware Horizon software. These solutions are optimized for virtualization of clients and provide the simplified deployment of virtual work places and management with them. The solution underwent validation of Dell EMC with assistance of VMware and NVIDIA.

The VxRail Appliance systems with the integrated PowerEdge servers are available to the order. Available in the majority of the markets they will become in the fourth quarter 2016, in 2017 – around the world. The VxRail Appliance systems on the basis of the PowerEdge servers with VMware Horizon software for virtualization of clients will go on sale in December, 2016.

On February 18, 2016 EMC and VMware company provided family of VCE VxRail devices.

As a part of functionality of VxRail devices of service of work with data, solutions on systems management of EMC, the hyper convergent software of VMware, including VMware vSphere, vCenter Server and VMware Virtual SAN - this product represents the simple, powerful and effective software-defined data warehouse which is initially integrated with vSphere.

All elements of the solution are delivered in the form of a uniform product family with one point of support. VxRail devices with the hybrid data warehouse or in the version "only a flash" help to expand and simplify an environment of VMware, provide advantages in performance and capacity of storage.

Hyper convergent VCE VxRail devices increase lead of convergent infrastructures of VCE, showing big dynamism, simplification of processes and risk reduction for small business, medium-sized companies and departments, or regional offices of corporations at virtualization of resources and providing working conditions of end users.

Jointly the developed VCE VxRail devices are characteristic dense integration of means of virtualization, computing resources, storages and the systems of data protection in one system with one point of support.

The organizations can begin with small, for example, from pair of virtual machines (VM) and increase volumes to thousands of VM, without interrupting system operation. VxRail devices support multilevel cloud storage from EMC that allows to extend seamlessly in more than 20 cloud services, including VMware vCloud Air, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure. In plans - Virtustream which will give the chance more safely to expand storage capacity, practically without restrictions, will provide in addition 10 TB additional capacities of the cloud storage on demand on each device.

In composition customers receive management tools in the form of VMware vCenter Server. VxRail devices are seamlessly integrated with VMware vSphere ecosystem, completely supporting the operating management tools, monitoring and availability from VMware. It helps to simplify IT processes at the same time reducing costs. VxRail devices are integrated with a cloud platform of management and solutions for end users, including VMware vRealize Operations and VMware Horizon Air.

The new family of VCE VxRail devices helps the IT companies to follow a way of decrease in complexity and disposal of big costs by means of hyper convergent infrastructure, saving the made investments on the existing Wednesday VMware. The VxRail Appliance device includes an extensive set of solutions, including systems Vblock, VxBlock and VxRack. It allows to offer customers convergent infrastructure which will cope practically with any loading – since remote divisions and to key DPC, irrespective of its sizes.

Family of the solutions VCE VxRail Appliance

These are the specialized systems dly hyper convergent infrastructure, designed together with VMware and completely integrated, configured and tested with the environment of VMware. The VCE VxRail Appliance systems include a rich set of EMC services for work with data, management tools systems and the hyper convergent software of VMware. They are available in various configurations to small or average projects and are scaled according to loading parameters, and configurations can include a flash memory.

VxRail All-Flash

Mass growth of popularity a flash memory is connected with desire of customers to start more and more virtual loadings on the smaller number of physical machines and the flash storages is warmed up by new economy. VxRail All-flash devices supplement the most extensive portfolio of systems on solid state drives, offering customers an opportunity of hyper convergent use of solutions. Customers can upgrade the DPCs and IT systems at remote offices, adding everything on 3.8 Tb a flash memory, up to 76 Tb – that exceeds an available indicator for any other hyper convergent systems in the market. In addition to it customers can combine different devices to satisfy the growing requirements – in particular a cluster from 64 All-Flash nodes allows to use 1792 computing cores and also 1,216 Tb of "crude" storage – and it is the powerful HCIA system which allows to reach maximum capacity and is easily scaled for work with application which demand a low delay.

Thanks to technologies of vertical NAND (3-D NAND) and VMware Virtual SAN 6.2, the VxRail device provide considerably high capacity of flash drives, in comparison with any other competitive offers, at lower cost. VMware Virtual SAN 6.2 differs in expanded architecture of optimization of performance which supports special means of increase in efficiency – deduplication, compression and "erasure coding". It allows VxRail to achieve high performance at the minimum costs and also to optimize work a flash disks. As a result of the VxRail device in the All-Flash configurations show cost on border between a flash - and magnetic drives and also provide net capacity at the same price, for gigabyte, as hybrid devices.
