Yandex: DeepHD

Product
The name of the base system (platform): Artificial intelligence (AI, Artificial intelligence, AI)
Developers: Yandex

DeepHD is the technology of Yandex improving images and video by means of artificial intelligence.

Strengths of technology (for September, 2018)

  • Increases resolution and recovers parts
  • Removes noise, defects and artifacts of compression
  • Equally well works with images and video
  • Processing of video takes place in real time

DeepHD is a technology of image enhancement from the super-resolution family. It is based on generative and competitive networks (engl. GAN — Generative Adversarial Network). During training the neural network recovers hi-res pictures from images with low quality and permission.

2018: Restoration of the Soviet animated films

On September 25, 2018 Yandex Company announced use of own DeepHD technology for improvement of image quality of the Soviet animated films.

DeepHD allows to raise image resolution using neural networks. As a result the picture becomes more accurate. The artificial intelligence which is the cornerstone of DeepHD does not change color and does not add anything superfluous on the image. The personnel before processing has identical contents. A difference only that DeepHD strengthens parts which were conceived and drawn by animators, but could be lost partially at digital processing of a film, explained in the company.

According to representatives of "Yandex", processing using DeepHD can be carried out literally "on the fly". The company acts this way with an air: the video flow which is given to "Yandex" by several TV channels is processed in real time and practically without delays arrives to the viewer already in the increased permission.

For September 25 in high resolution it is possible to look at ten animated cartoons of Soyuzmultfilm studio: "Scarlet Flower" (1952), "A gold antelope" (1954), "The snow queen" (1957), Thumbelina (1964), Bremen Town Musicians (1969), "Umka looks for the friend" (1970), Mowgli (1973), Nutcracker (1973), "A travel of an ant" (1983) and a cycle about "A kitten by the name of Gav" (1976–1982).

It is possible to look at the cinema and animated cartoons processed using neural networks directly on "Yandex" or on Kinopoisk. It is possible to find them on requests [movies in deephd] and [animated films in deephd]. The collection at the same time will be constantly replenished, promised in "Yandex".
