2021: Start of construction of the second building of the proton therapy center in St. Petersburg
On October 19, 2021, the official construction of the second building of the proton therapy center of the Berezin Sergey Medical Institute (MIBS) began in St. Petersburg. Investments in this project exceed 6 billion rubles, it is planned to implement it by 2024.
The new 12-story building with a total area of almost 30 thousand square meters. m will house children's and adult hospitals. Departments of diagnostics, remote and contact radiation therapy, surgery, intensive care and intensive care will work.
The complex will include a fitness center, a boarding house for relatives of patients and invited specialists. On the basis of the new cancer center, radiologists and radiotherapists from all over the country will be trained.
This is a strategic partner of the city and one of the largest private investors in medicine in our country. It is very important for us that such innovative projects are being implemented, despite the difficult situation, "commented St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov on the start of construction. |
Smolny's press service adds that all relevant committees of the city authorities will provide the necessary support to the project, including helping to resolve all issues related to the construction of a new building, which will increase the volume of high-tech oncological care, will make it more accessible to patients.
According to Alexander Beglov, thanks to the new building, it will be possible to increase the volume of high-tech oncological care, which will make it more accessible to patients.
According to TASS, proton therapy is considered the safest and most effective method of radiation therapy. It significantly increases the chances of recovery. Side effects, risks of complications are reduced. Proton therapy is used in the most difficult cases when surgical surgery is impossible.[1]
2020: Start of construction of the second stage of the oncological building of the proton therapy center
On December 3, 2020 it became known of the preparing beginning of construction of the second turn of the multipurpose oncological building of the center proton terapiimeditsinsky institute of Berezina of Sergey (MIBS). 5.1 billion rubles are invested in this project.
The new medical facility will be designed to accommodate 186 patients, including 50 children. There will be departments of surgery, diagnostics, genetic, clinical and morphological laboratories, a day hospital and a training center for radiology and radiation therapy. The second phase of the proton center will work in such areas as molecular genetics, teranostics, flash therapy, etc.
The city will support this project and help. The work of this center is very important not only for St. Petersburg, but also for the country. With the introduction of the new building, the center will take a leading place in world oncology, "said St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov during a visit to the first proton therapy center at the Berezin Medical Institute, which was built in 2017. In June 2020, a 60-bed hospital opened in this institution. |
Proton radiation therapy, the course of which in MIBS costs about 2 million rubles, is included in the state support program in 2020. The city pays 100 people a year from the budget for treatment. In 2020, federal quotas for the treatment of 600 patients were received.
According to the press service of Smolny, proton therapy is the most sparing and effective method of radiation therapy, significantly increasing the chances of recovery. When used, side effects, risks of complications and relapses are reduced. This method is used in the most difficult cases when it is impossible to perform surgery, it is considered the best radiation treatment in the world for children with cancer.[2]
2017
Getting Started in Test Mode
The clinical center of proton therapy in the Primorsky district of St. Petersburg was launched in a test mode. This was reported at the end of September 2017 at the Medical Institute named after Sergei Berezin (MIBS). Funds for the treatment of the first Petersburgers by proton therapy were allocated from the city budget.
Services provided
As of September 25, 2017, the center has already begun admission by oncologists, patient examinations are being carried out on computer and magnetic resonance tomographs of the latest generation. In parallel, patients are being prepared directly for treatment by proton radiation therapy: individual fixations are made - masks and mattresses, plans are being developed to treat the first patients.
We are going strictly according to the schedule: the diagnostic department is already receiving patients, the latest preparations for the treatment itself are underway. As planned, the first Petersburgers with detected oncological diseases will be able to begin a course of proton therapy in the fourth quarter of this year, "said Arkady Stolpner, Chairman of the Board of the MIBS . |
Equipment and specialists
In the center there are:
- a proton therapy plant manufactured by Varian Medical Systems (USA), which allows the use of advanced and accurate radiation technology - the so-called "pencil beam scanning."
- A complete line of modern diagnostic equipment necessary for planning and controlling the treatment of patients with protons is a two-energy computer tomograph (CT), a specialized magnetic resonance imaging (MRI ).
- Department of Nuclear Medicine with positron emission tomograph (PET/CT) with its own production of radiopharmaceuticals.
In total, MIBS invested 7.5 billion rubles in the design, construction, equipment and training of specialists. The team of radiologists and medical physicists was formed from specialists with many years of experience at the MIBS Cancer Clinic, trained at leading proton centers in the USA, Europe, Japan.
Appointment
It is expected that the high-tech proton therapy center will completely close the need for St. Petersburg to treat cancer patients with protons, give an impetus to the development of medical tourism and attract patients from other regions of the Russian Federation and from abroad to the city.
According to preliminary calculations, after reaching design capacity, the MIBS Proton Therapy Center will be able to receive up to 800 people annually. It is assumed that at least half of the patient flow will be children.
Project Details
As part of an agreement signed by the Government of St. Petersburg and the Medical Institute named after Sergei Berezin (MIBS) in June 2015, a 6.5 ha plot was allocated for the construction of a high-tech medical facility. According to September 2017, the project for the construction of an access road to the center from ul. Glukharskaya is at the completion stage.
First physical proton beam obtained
March 22, 2017, at the Proton Therapy Center in St. Petersburg, the first physical proton beam was obtained at the exit of the cyclotron.
"Oneof the most important stages in the construction of our proton center has been passed. It means that the installation of equipment manufactured by the American company Varian, which has been going on for more than 10 months, is coming to an end, "said Arkady Stolpner, Chairman of the Board of MIBS.
As the specialists of Varian Medical Systems explained, in the cyclotron ProBeam heavy charged particles - protons - accelerate to an energy of at least 250 MeV with a beam current of at least 270 nA. The formed proton beam is then fed into the delivery system and at a rate of two-thirds of the speed of light, along the transport path with the help of powerful magnets, is fed to the treatment room, where the beam is directed to the cancer site in the patient's body with the help of a rotating gantri system.
"Hardware installation and debugging is on schedule. And this means that the first patient, as planned, will receive proton treatment this fall, "says Arkady Stolpner.
In 2017, the MIBS Proton Therapy Center, which is a strategic investment project in St. Petersburg, will receive 25-30 people at the expense of quotas funded from the city budget. The design capacity of the center is up to 800 patients per year.
The cost of proton treatment is high, and abroad it is usually paid from the state budget or from insurance funds. In the Russian Federation for 2017, only state medical institutions have access to federal funding for VMP.
Obtaining such funding by the MIBS Proton Therapy Center would completely solve the issue of modern radiation treatment of solid tumors in children, at least in the North-West and Central Federal Districts, Arkady Stolpner emphasized.
The clinical launch of the proton center is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2017. The volume of private investments amounted to 7.5 billion rubles.
2015: Obtaining the status of a strategic investment project of St. Petersburg
In 2015, at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, the MIBS proton center received the status of a strategic investment project in St. Petersburg.
2013: Start of construction of the center
Construction has been underway since 2013.
