2018: Transfer to virtual work places of 14 thousand employees

In February, 2018 the Jet Infosystems company announced project completion of implementation of 14,000 virtual work places for VTB Group. The project affected more than 90 divisions of group on all Russia, including branches, regional and additional offices. Today it is one of the largest implementations of VDI in Russia and Eastern Europe.

Premises and project objectives

Implementation of VDI became a part of the program of VTB for centralization of IT services and provided the uniform IT platform for integration of structures of Bank of Moscow and VTB 24 with VTB Bank. Historically IT systems of bank branches developed independently: in everyone own DPC was organized, server solutions with the licenses, politicians and standards of security are deployed. Similar difficult infrastructure required the wide state of maintenance of specialists on places. In addition, there was a question of information security support, prevention of possible leaks of personal data, etc. Krom of gain of security measures the aim to update the PC park in workplaces of users was pursued.

Implementation Progress

The Jet Infosystems company developed strategy of virtualization of jobs of users. During the project obsolete customer premise equipment was replaced by hardware thin clients of Dell Wyse, and on other PCs the software agent of Citrix XenDesktop is set. Afterwards the failing PCs will be replaced on thin clients. Such scheme allowed to reduce one-time expenditure for hardware.

The virtualization platform selected the solution VMware vSphere which proved as the reliable instrument of creation of virtual infrastructure. The hardware of the solution is executed using the server hardware of Huawei, the "price/quality" which showed an optimal ratio in terms of performance and convenience of administration. In addition to Huawei, four arrays of Hitachi with all-flash drives with additional reservation of data for storage of the user information were used.

Opportunity was a priority at design of VDI is centralized to unroll, deliver and update software at virtual workstations. A similar system existed in bank and to VDI, but it was necessary to ensure its functioning in the new environment. As a result as means of the centralized deployment the Citrix Machine Creation Services system was used.

Results

In regional divisions of VTB bank 4800 jobs, in Bank of Moscow – 7000, at head office – 2000 standard jobs were virtualized. At local failures jobs are recovered automatically without breaks in work of users. On a case of global disasters for key staff recovery during a short period without data loss is provided.

Due to consolidation of regional IT systems the level of information security increased, the park of the equipment was considerably reduced and costs for IT support decreased. Savings from project implementation by 2020 will make 1.42 billion rubles. It was succeeded to consolidate infrastructure practically without violation of work of remote workers. Thanks to the implemented solution it was succeeded to implement legitimate remote access: it is possible to manage workflows from any place in the world, fulfilling all requirements of a security service of VTB Group.

2015: Signing of the contract on virtualization of jobs worth 1.4 billion rubles

In December, 2015 the VTB bank carried out large purchase^[1] of software and the equipment for the project of creation of infrastructure of virtual work places of users. The starting price of purchase was 1.43 billion rubles. According to the results of consideration of requests from suppliers the bank signed the contract with Jet Infosystems company worth 1.41 billion rubles.

Within the agreement supply of equipment and software for virtualization and protection of jobs and also providing related services was provided. Among deliverable products - servers Huawei, disk arrays Hitachi, switches Brocade and Cisco, thin clients Dell, software VMware for virtualization of workstations and information systems of regional divisions of VTB, software Citrix for virtualization of jobs, Kaspersky Security for protection of virtual workstations and servers.

A set of services included installation and setup of deliverable components of infrastructure, centralization of local information systems and file resources of bank, data transfer of users in infrastructure of virtual work places.

The project of virtualization covers about 14 thousand jobs: all jobs of a branch network and standard jobs of parent organization,Dmitry Nazipov working in 2015 as the Head of Department of IT – the senior vice president of VTB told TAdviser. Followed from terms of reference of the project that in regional divisions of VTB bank 4800 jobs, in Bank of Moscow – 7000 jobs, in parent organization of VTB bank – 2000 standard jobs should be virtualized.

The project of virtualization also included 150 remote jobs for the selected employee categories (applied and system administrators, bank representatives in territories of the child organizations), and 50 jobs of mobile users.

At the time of start of the project in a branch network of VTB bank employees work on the PC with access to the main centralized applications using the terminal mode and a significant amount of the installed local applications. In parent organization of bank employees work on the PC with the installed client applications, - Dmitry Nazipov noted

Large-scale implementation of technology of virtualization of jobs was preceded by a pilot project which was conducted within the last year, Nazipov told. During it 200 virtual work places in the centers of operational support of VTB bank organized in several regions of Russia were created.

The technology of virtual work places was target for VTB Group. According to Dmitry Nazipov, projects of virtualization of jobs were implemented in several organizations of group, the largest of them - in VTB 24.
