The attractiveness of Mari El for guests is formed by unique natural and cultural objects. The capital of the republic, Yoshkar-Ola, is known for its architectural ensembles, such as the embankment of Bruges, stylized as Flemish Gothic, and the Tsarevokokshay Kremlin, a reconstruction of the ancient fortress. Popular with tourists are the Square of the Republic and the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Annunciation Tower, the National Art Gallery, as well as one of the oldest buildings in the city - the Holy Trinity Church.

Outside the capital are iconic landmarks. It is the historical city of Kozmodemyansk with its museums, including the Ostap Bender Museum of Satire and Humor, and Sheremetevsky Castle in the village of Yurino. The natural wealth of the republic is represented by the Mari Chodra National Park with relict oak forests and karst lakes, the Bolshaya Kokshaga Reserve, as well as a place iconic for paragliding lovers - Mount Alamner.

Financing for the development of the tourism industry of Mari El is carried out, among other things, within the framework of national projects. According to the head of the republic, Yuri Zaitsev, more than 20 million rubles were allocated for the modernization of the infrastructure of Yoshkar-Ola as the main tourist center.[1]

The head of the region, Yury Zaytsev, told reporters that 148,894 tourists visited the republic in the winter season of 2024-2025, and more than 77 thousand people (52% of the total) chose Yoshkar-Ola.

To develop the tourism industry within the framework of the approved master plan in the next ten years, Mari El plans to implement 12 flagship tourism projects, 32 quick-to-implement initiatives and 43 long-term programs.

Two projects received federal funding in the form of grants from the Ministry agriculture Russia - Ecopark "ZaAzyakovo" and "Marie Otar" ("Mari apiary").

In 2024, the tourist infrastructure of the republic was replenished with 60 new modular rooms and two four-star hotels, which made it possible to increase the ability to receive guests.[2][3]
