2025: Tourist flow in Mari El for the year increased to 1.3 million people
In January 2026, the results of the tourist year were summed up in the Republic of Mari El. The head of the region, Yury Zaytsev, said that in 2025 about 1.3 million tourists and sightseers visited the republic.
According to Zaytsev, tourism is one of the key areas of economic development of the republic. To further stimulate it, active work is underway to improve the transport infrastructure. The local airport is being reconstructed, where a new terminal has already been built. In parallel, river tourism is developing: in 2025, a new pier was commissioned in the city of Kozmodemyansk, which made it possible to accept 285 cruise ships.
The attractiveness of Mari El for guests is formed by unique natural and cultural objects. The capital of the republic, Yoshkar-Ola, is known for its architectural ensembles, such as the embankment of Bruges, stylized as Flemish Gothic, and the Tsarevokokshay Kremlin, a reconstruction of the ancient fortress. Popular with tourists are the Square of the Republic and the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Annunciation Tower, the National Art Gallery, as well as one of the oldest buildings in the city - the Holy Trinity Church.
Outside the capital are iconic landmarks. It is the historical city of Kozmodemyansk with its museums, including the Ostap Bender Museum of Satire and Humor, and Sheremetevsky Castle in the village of Yurino. The natural wealth of the republic is represented by the Mari Chodra National Park with relict oak forests and karst lakes, the Bolshaya Kokshaga Reserve, as well as a place iconic for paragliding lovers - Mount Alamner.
Financing for the development of the tourism industry of Mari El is carried out, among other things, within the framework of national projects. According to the head of the republic, Yuri Zaitsev, more than 20 million rubles were allocated for the modernization of the infrastructure of Yoshkar-Ola as the main tourist center.[1]
2024: Tourist flow growth to 1.2 million people
The tourist flow in the Republic of Mari El at the end of 2024 reached 1.2 million people, which was a record figure for the region. This was reported in April 2025 in the government of the republic.
According to the forecast of regional authorities, in 2025 the number of tourists may increase to 1.3 million people, which indicates positive dynamics in the field of domestic tourism and growing interest in the cultural and natural attractions of the region.
According to TASS, more than half of tourists coming to Mari El prefer to visit the capital of the republic - the city of Yoshkar-Ola. The head of the region, Yury Zaytsev, told reporters that 148,894 tourists visited the republic in the winter season of 2024-2025, and more than 77 thousand people (52% of the total) chose Yoshkar-Ola.
To develop the tourism industry within the framework of the approved master plan in the next ten years, Mari El plans to implement 12 flagship tourism projects, 32 quick-to-implement initiatives and 43 long-term programs.
An important part of the tourism development strategy in the region is the modernization of transport infrastructure. In 2024, the berth in Kozmodemyansk was commissioned with a capacity of 200 passengers. In June 2025, the construction of a pier in Yurino near Sheremetev Castle, which is a popular attraction, will begin. According to the head of the republic, in 2026 the construction of the pier in Kokshaysk will also begin. In parallel, the regional airport is being modernized.
The rural tourism segment is developing dynamically in the republic. Various options for agritourism have already been included in the register of routes in this direction. Two projects received federal funding in the form of grants from the Ministry agriculture Russia - Ecopark "ZaAzyakovo" and "Marie Otar" ("Mari apiary").
In 2024, the tourist infrastructure of the republic was replenished with 60 new modular rooms and two four-star hotels, which made it possible to increase the ability to receive guests.[2][3]
