The port of Rotterdam implemented a blockchain for control of acceptance and sending cargo containers

Customers: Rotterdam port

Contractors: T-Mining
Product: Projects based on blockchain technology

Project date: 2020/07

In the middle of July, 2020 the Rotterdam port implemented a blockchain for control of acceptance and sending cargo containers. At the expense of this project it is going to improve automation of transportations and to increase their security.

Before the port of Rotterdam used the PIN code for authorization of the drivers who are taking away a container on behalf of the forwarding agent. However this system is not so reliable, apparently, as the PIN code passes through a great number of persons, from transport company to the forwarding agent of transport company that raises a fraud risk. Besides, errors in authorization on the basis of the PIN code can lead to delays and complaints.

The Antwerp company T-Mining suggested port to use the digital tokens representing the rights to a container. To drivers of transport it is granted permission for taking of a load after transfer of a digital token on the terminal. Each token is unique and corresponds to a certain container, and the blockchain platform guarantees reliability of authorization. Using a blockchain, operators of terminals can be sure that the container was issued to the necessary driver. At the same time the marker does not disclose information on the previous transactions and does not allow the third parties to get access to confidential information.

Earlier the port of Rotterdam already implemented the DELIVER blockchain platform for conducting electronic document management, tracking of movements of a load and financing. The complete list of participants of a new pilot project includes consignors of CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, MSC, ONE-Line, the operator of the Hutchison Ports ECT Rotterdam terminal, logistic companies Rotterdam Fruit Wharf, Milestone Fresh, VTO, Portmade and T-Mining.[1]
