Nizhny Novgorod Metro has been operating since 1985.

Over time, the company developed, new stations were opened, new metro lines were built. In 2007, the Nizhny Novgorod Metro MP company was formed. Since the end of 2012, 14 stations have been operating.

Increase in the cost of extending the metro by 35% to 47.99 billion rubles

The cost of the contract for the extension of the auto plant metro line to the Sennaya station in Nizhny Novgorod increased to 47.99 billion rubles. Information in December 2025 follows from the contract card. At the time of its conclusion in 2021, the cost was 35.58 billion rubles. That is, the contract has risen in price by almost 35%. The documents indicate that during the design it became necessary to include additional types of work. Including the discrepancy between the depth of the distillation tunnels, it is necessary to clarify the dimensions of the starting and dismantling pits.[1]

Allocation of another 7.4 billion rubles for the construction of the metro

Adjustments have been made to the budget of Nizhny Novgorod for the planning period of 2026, providing for the allocation of another 7.4 billion rubles. to extend the Avtozavodskaya line of the Nizhny Novgorod metro. This was announced in December 2025 by the director of the finance department Yuri Mochalkin. Regional Governor Gleb Nikitin said that work on the construction of the metro in the upper part of the city will last about two more years. The construction of tracks and station complexes should be completed by the end of 2026, finishing work will be carried out in 2027.[2]

The government of the Nizhny Novgorod region will not "freeze" the project for the construction of the metro, NewsNN reported in June.

Design documentation has been developed and prepared for the construction of three stations - Opera House, Sennaya and Volga. However, funds from the federal budget have not yet been allocated.

The administration of the Nizhny Novgorod region is negotiating and considering various options for the development of the transport infrastructure of the regional center, including with the participation of investments from ВЭБ.РФ and Russian Railways.

In particular, negotiations are underway on the use of existing railway tracks to organize multimodal transportation by metro and city electric trains.
